Furniture budget when relocating - buy or ship?

Post by Bananna » Sun, 05 May 2019 4:06 pm

Hi!

My bf and I will be relocating to Singapore in 4-5 months. We have the option, given by my bf’s expat package, to either ship our own furniture or get approx. 14000 SGD to shop furniture, when we arrive.

Right now we are considering not shipping our furniture (getting it stored instead), find a partially furnitured condo and then buy everything IKEA-style and/or second hand. While we’d like a homey feel, we are only staying for 1-2 years and would prefer not to spend too much time on decorating.

Would you say it is realistic to spend 14000 or less on furniture (including all items ranging from kitchen appliances, bed sheets to sofa)? Or should we opt for the shipping option?

All advice is welcome :)

If you take the money, can you opt for a furnished apartment?

Kitchen appliances will be included in a "partially furnished" condo, so that'll save you a large cost. You might have to buy a washing machine, but that'll vary from condo to condo.
SGD14,000 while not a huge amount it should be more than enough I would say for ikea range furniture.
