Seeking Advice: Probation after Promotion?

Post by xxxstanxxx » Mon, 22 Apr 2019 4:05 pm

Hi all! Am new here & hoping to get some advice.

I joined the company April 2018 as a Sales Executive. Now April 2019, my Boss is "promoting" me to a Managerial role (without pay increase, bad finances). This is not managerial training, or promotion prep. I have been "awarded" this new title (without the chance to discuss/decline), along with all the responsibilities that come with it, but they've not given me any contract or anything to sign.

My GM managed to negotiate a pay increment for me. BUT. I need to pass another round of probation (3 - 6 months) before I can get the increment. My Boss has not given an estimate of what my increment may be, but apparently it's "a lot of money - more money than I can get if I change jobs."

Thing is, my Boss is not the best at keeping promises. So, my question is: has anyone ever experienced something like this? Is this common practice in Singapore to go through another round of probation for a promotion? What can I do to protect myself?

I've never been promoted before, so I have no idea what the standard practice is. Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks!

This is not usual in my experience. Probation is only at the start of employment because you are still an unknown quantity at that point. When you are promoted, it means that they have already assessed you to be ready for the next step in the corporate ladder, so a probation is not necessary. Basically, the probation period of your promotion is your current job role.

Did you discuss how you can get out of probation? Are there quantifiable goals for you to achieve?

My thoughts exactly! I think I've been a steady performer during my employment here. Don't know whether this is their ploy to cut down expenses for the duration of my "probation period".

These are very good points, will take note & check on this. Thank you!

I've not had that discussion with my Boss yet, as have yet to meet him face-to-face. Just wanted to get some ideas before talking to him. They joked about tripling my sales target. Not sure that's my criteria for passing probation ](*,)

What happens if you fail probation?
I not lawyer/teacher/CPA.
You've been arrested? Law Society of Singapore can provide referrals.
You want an International School job? School website or http://www.ISS.edu
Your rugrat needs a School? Avoid for profit schools
You need Tax advice? Ask a CPA
You ran away without doing NS? Shame on you!

Not entirely sure... Will bring this up when I meet Boss to discuss.

Maybe they un-promote me? Or keep me at my Executive pay forever? Since it's much cheaper than hiring a new Manager.

I read this about three or four times. Unless you absolutely have no opportunity to take another job, I'd tell them to stuff their "promotion" up their ass with a ten foot pole.

This is a screw job all the way around. I wouldn't put up with it. I'd tell them to f*ck off, that if they want me as a manager, they can pay me as a manager. You are letting them walk all over you like a doormat in front of four floors.

This is the first time I've heard of this happening, so I'm pretty shocked. Thinking to tell them (nicely) to GTFO with the promotion, since I'm literally getting nothing out of it.

Appreciate your reply. Thanks so much for your kind advice.
