Missing the one year deadline for Singapore citizenship by descent

Post by soupdumpling » Thu, 14 Mar 2019 9:17 am

Hi all! First time posting here.

My spouse and I were wondering if there were any Singaporean parents with a child who is a US citizen by birth, and applied for Singapore citizenship by descent when the child was one year or older? In other words, any Singaporean parents who for some reason (either by mistake or by choice) did not register your child for Singapore citizenship by descent within a year of the child's birth?

We would really like to hear your experience with the process if you missed the one year deadline to obtain the Singapore citizenship by descent for your child.

Look forward to your insights. Many thanks!

You can appeal to ICA.
I not lawyer/teacher/CPA.
You've been arrested? Law Society of Singapore can provide referrals.
You want an International School job? School website or http://www.ISS.edu
Your rugrat needs a School? Avoid for profit schools
You need Tax advice? Ask a CPA
You ran away without doing NS? Shame on you!

OP
Did you not read the guideline?
Read the part when you missed the deadline.

The Singapore Embassy can assist to forward applications for Singapore Citizenship to the Singapore Immigration and Checkpoints Authority for processing for a child who is born overseas and who meets any of the following conditions:

The father, who is a Singapore citizen by Birth and has a lawful marriage,
The father, who is a Singapore citizen by Registration and has a lawful marriage. The child shall not acquire citizenship of the country he was born by reason of his birth in that country. This bit don't worry about it. If child is born overseas, you can still apply although child is foreign citizen. just to scare the hell out of you. Do not stress
The mother, who is a Singapore citizen by Birth and the child born on or after 15 May 2004.
The mother, who is a Singapore citizen by Registration and the child born on or after 15 May 2004. The child shall not acquire citizenship of the country he was born by reason of his birth in that country.
The father (who has a lawful marriage at time of child’s birth) or mother, is a Singapore citizen by Descent has to complete an additional Annex form to the application declaring their residence period in Singapore. The application can only be accepted if the applicant fulfils the requirements stipulated in the Annex.
Note: The application has to be submitted within one year of the child’s birth. Otherwise, a letter of explanation is required for late submission. In order to fulfil two of the Singapore citizenship application’s requirements as stated on ICA’s website, the child's parents must be legally married at the point of application and the child has to have an official Vietnam birth certificate which can be obtained at the City/ Province Justice Department.

Application Procedure

The following documents should be submitted online to ICA Singapore:

a) Application form.

b) One recent passport-sized colour photograph of child affixed on the completed citizenship application form. The photograph must be:

- 35 mm wide by 45 mm high without border and taken within the last three months;

- taken full face without headgear, unless the applicant habitually wears a headgear in accordance with religious or racial customs. The headgear must not hide the applicant's facial features;

- the facial image must be between 25 mm and 35 mm from chin to crown; and taken against plain white background with a matt or semi-matt finish;

c) Official Birth Certificate of child and passport/travel document. (if the documents are not in English, it needs to be translated by the Justice Division of the District People’s Committee and notarised by the Consular Department of Vietnam Ministry of Foreign Affairs).

d) Parents’ Identity Cards, Birth Certificates and Passports (if the documents are not in English, they need to be translated by the Justice Division of the District People’s Committee and notarised by the Consular Department of Vietnam Ministry of Foreign Affairs).

e) Documentary proof of parents' residential status in the child’s country of birth;

f) Parents' marriage certificate (if the document is not in English, it needs to be translated by the Justice Division of the District People’s Committee). If the marriage is registered outside Singapore, a Statutory Declaration to the effect that the spouse is his one and only wife, is required;

g) Parents' divorce certificate/separation deed/custody document of child or children by previous spouses (if applicable) and spouse’s death certificate (if applicable). If any, then the applicant is advised to complete the attached marriage history form (Annex B);

The following additional documents (original and photocopy) are required to be submitted if application is submitted after one year of minor’s birth:

h) Parents' letter of employment from current employer dated no more than 3 months from the date of citizenship application, stating occupation, date of employment and monthly gross salary;

i) Latest 6 months payslip;

j) Signed Authorization Form (Appendix (SC) giving consent for ICA to obtain financial information with the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore and the Central Provident Fund Board in respect of this citizenship application;

k) For self-employed applicant, business registration certificate from Accounting & Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA), latest balance sheet, profit and loss account;

l) Birth certificate(s); Singapore Citizenship Certificate(s); passport(s) of other child/children; and

m) A written explanation for the delay in submission.

All the bits above you have to fulfil. There is not one applicant during my time refused SG citizenship for the child be it born in SG or overseas not granted. Is more of checking on the parent where you are earning and they can tax you if the foreign country you reside has a DTA among two countries. Clever and cunning huh ??
