I see - definitely see your point sms. In this event, would you advise against applying for the LTVP+ with PLOC in my case (where I have already applied for PR for my wife)? Or do you feel it would make sense to have it in parallel? In our case, we still have about 2-3 months of time prior to planning our move abroad, and are in no 'hurry' (in a certain sense).

No problem. the two will be looked at separately but the highest one determined to be qualified for will be issued. In other words, the LTVP is a temporary residency permit. If qualified, they will issue that initially (depending on the time frame between that and the PR application). Once you have the LTVP(+) the PR application will continue to be processed and ultimately either rejected or approved. the LTVP will have no bearing on the PR application so by all means apply for it.

Yup thats right. I applied for PR and LTVP (renewal). LTVP is quite fast. Within 1-1.5 month you will get your in principle approval email.

Hey guys,

Just wanted to drop an update:

So far - we are closing in on 9 months pending. As such, we are considering to apply for the LTVP+ such that my wife can move back home with me and have a better chance of getting a job here. Quick question: As part of the application process, I understand that one of the documents required is a Disembarkation/Embarkation card. As we are located abroad now, we do not have access to these cards which are issued out typically at immigration.
How could I proceed with this?

Return to Singapore with her and apply for the ltvp as soon as you arrive, you will then have the disembarkation card with the number on it. I don't think you can get it beforehand but don't hold me to that as I'm not positive on that point. However, once here and the ltvp applied for, it should not be any issue to get it in time or (Visa free 90 day entry) to get an extension of the SVP while waiting. Besides that, the other processing just continues (re PR application) until such time as a determination has been made.

My other comments come from the fact that I've been here 36 years and been a PR for over 25 of them and I've watch/felt all the changes that make PR so far and away different from citizens that the only thing we have left in common (more or less) is that we pay more taxes than locals do (although the tax rates are the same, most of our subsidies that we used to be entitled to have, just like the LoC but in reverse, been nibbled away until we have virtually no subsidies at all, cannot vote, and can lose our PR if we fail to renew our re-entry permit before going on vacation for a couple of days. And can only buy resale flats at inflated prices from mercenary locals who refuse to sell to locals because they know PRs have to have a place to live. But our sons have to protect your arses doing your National Service as well. So, until you have walked a kilometer in our shoes......

Question, why don't you get SC?

Honest answer (for you I'm not sure why)? I never planned to stay here. But due to an unfortunate chain of events, I lost my retirement home in the US last year so no longer have anything there at all and I made a vow to my wife before we got married that her parents would always be taken care of. They've lived with me for the last 30 years (although here father died 14 years ago, her invalid, bedridden, dementiated Mother is still living here under our care. She is 91 or 92. My wife and I are now in our 70's. The government is pragmatic here. They've already sucked all the useable knowledge juices from me (until I retired 7 months ago). My son has already done his NS. My daughter has given the government 2 additional cannon fodder units (Singaporean grandsons). If I were the government, why give me SGC now? When I'm more likely to become a liability (medical subsidies) than a contributor. It sucks, but it is what it is. The losing of a $4M waterfront farm wasn't anticipated and couldn't be seen in advance. (The farm was in my mother's name as I was not allow to own private property as a PR if I bought an HDB flat - just one more way PR's get F*cked here.)

So if you think about it from the government's over pragmatic P.O.V. one cannot blame them. They already have gotten what they needed at the time.

Makes sense, thanks for the explanation. Are you sure SC is it out of the question, even with such extensive family ties?

Won't happen according to someone I know inside ICA (the officer who gave me PR over a quarter of a century ago) - who told me this around 5-8 years ago at a social function at SICC) But he also told me that remaining a PR here and retired on Family Ties was a no issue one. Fortunately, I have US SS which more than covers my expenses now that I'm retired and still allows me to save. Singapore is inexpensive or as expensive as you want to make it. But losing a farm that was worth, at one time, $8m (before Obama) but even after him trashing the economy, was still worth $4m it was a hard bitter pill to swallow that I'll not get into - my mother passed on June 2018. Suffice it to say it was 200+ acres on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and had a half a mile of deep water frontage, two pond, wetland & woodlands full of deer and other game and 70 tillable acres and was meant to be my retirement home. Life has a way of tossing you curve balls.
