We are a family of 4 (2 kids aged 2yrs & 3 mths) possibly moving to Sing soon. Friends advise that longterm car rental rather than relying on taxis is the best way to get around with little kids. Does anyone out there do this and what are the costs? Can you recommend a car hire company? We would want the most basic car around (with aircon).

Hello,
I thoroughly recommend that you join a Car Sharing Scheme. I just joined one and find it fantastic. It is similar to car rental except more flexible. e.g. you can hire a car by the hour, or day, or week. Cars are parked in various depots around Singapore and you can book and pick up a car from the depot nearest to you.
You need to pay $200-$300 in joining and admin fees. But I reckon it's worth it.
I joined the NTUC Income Carsharing Co-op and like them so far. But there are other companies in Singapore offering this service too. Maybe do a google search for "car sharing Singapore".
Hope this helps.
Cheers,

Car Sharing, as mentioned above is...
http://www.carcoop.com.sg/
Long term car rental, a big company in Sg is..
http://www.citylimo.com.sg/
http://www.sianghock.com.sg/rent_car.html
In my opinion, if u can afford car leasing, shd do it rather than rely on taxis. I noticed that most expats with families rent MPVs like the Toyota Picnic/ Ipsum.
If have 2 kids, means 2 car seats, better to get something big, just in case the maid needs to tag along.

If you can afford it, lease a car. We like Citilimo.
