Blaming mummy and daddy - fine, but being educated as a lawyer and missing the whole NS issue, this is something extremely difficult to believe.

Well I think some facts were hidden from him... which when he discovered them were too hard to unwind. However note that he DID serve NS which he could possibly have avoided.
