Convert to Singapore Citizenship

Post by merry » Mon, 28 Feb 2005 11:43 am

Hi All,

My huband and myself are Singapore PR. We have 2 sons. Do you have any advice on what we have to consider if we would like to convert to be Singaporean Citizenship?

Thank you and appreciate your input.

Merry

The pros are that you can vote (whee), buy land (more useful) and can't be kicked out anymore (quite useful).

The obvious con is that you will lose your existing citizenship (unless you are naughty and keep your old passport and/or quietly reapply). For some countries (China, India) this isn't much of a loss... for some countries (US, most of Europe) it is.

You have 2 sons, so national service is a consideration. As PRs they have a choice of not doing it if they no longer want to be PRs. Once they become citizens, they no longer have the option.

I'm on slightly shaky ground here, but AFAIK if you get your citizenship after your children were born, they will not become citizens automatically.
