US Green Card Holder moving to Singapore

Post by ryan123 » Sun, 22 Jul 2018 2:11 pm

hey my wife and i just got our green card about 2 months ago, and i was just presented by my us company to move to SG. I have a few questions:
1. If i move this year do i still need to pay any taxes in SG for 2018? I believe theres a 183 days rule.
2. Would i be expected to pay at most the same amount of taxes as i would pay in California? Or would i be double double taxed? I make more than 800k usd/year right now.
3. Does it make more sense for me to get rid of the green card before 2019? My wife can keep hers as she would be in a much lower tax bracket? However, given im on an expat package, im still going to be paid by a us company? Does getting rid of it make that much difference?

If you don't plan to return to the USA by all means get rid go your green card. You'll only be liable for Singapore tax. However with a green card you'll pay far more even with the double taxation treaty and FEIC.
I not lawyer/teacher/CPA.
You've been arrested? Law Society of Singapore can provide referrals.
You want an International School job? School website or http://www.ISS.edu
Your rugrat needs a School? Avoid for profit schools
You need Tax advice? Ask a CPA
You ran away without doing NS? Shame on you!

thanks for the quick reply, i added one more point in the original post. I will be paid by my us company on an expat package, so does getting rid of the green card even make a difference?

Surely someone who earns 800k can do some financial analysis?

You really need a well versed, USA based international tax accountant. The chances of you finding one in Singapore are slim, and if you do, very expensive.

Bottom line: Just dumping your green card will not exempt you from taxation immediately, and doing so may cause unwanted penalties, if the government determines that you dumped your PR just to avoid tax.

You'll pay Singapore tax, if you are in Singapore longer than 183 days, your tax residency is bridged so you'll end up paying resident rates. All Singapore tax can be claimed as a tax credit on a USA return so there is no real "double taxation", per se, but because of your green card status, you are subject to onerous USA laws that tax your income regardless of your world residency.

Perhaps OP meant by 'expat status' you mean the company will impose hypothetical tax rates... that may be ok - as it means OP won't be hit extra hard.
