Landlord refused to provide the service as discussed

Postby magnetommy » Thu, 07 Jun 2018 10:01 pm

Hi guys, I just moved to Singapore and has rented a room in an HDB place with single female landlord. I loved the cleanliness of the place so I rented it.
At the signing, the agent promised me that the landlord will provide the wifi for me in just couple days. But now almost a week, the landlord seems to refuse to provide me the wifi (actually she couldn't explain to me because she only speaks basic English, in first 1 or 2 days, she said something 'later' but then she seems to reject me on that case). The agent after my complaints started to convince me to rent mobile wifi without any clear reasons.
I'm frustrated, what should I do in this case?
Thanks guys

Unless it is in your TA there isn't much you can do. I think you are going to have to provide your own wifi.

Wifi can be a touchy issue. The owner of the wifi contract can be on the hook for the stuff you browse or post. It's not expensive to use mobile Wifi.

I have my own fibre line as I move along. That is not as scary and troublesome as it sound - just go to any branch of any ISP of your liking and sign up for one. It is cheap, less than SGD50 per month and they give you a router too. Sometimes they will also give you a few months free so it rounds up to be very economic.

One house can install two lines, but seems to me they have to be of different ISPs. If you worried about the terms (2 years contract blah blah blah) you have the option to subscribe on monthly basis. The first time installation could be free, you just need to pay when you move the line to another places. It is around SGD 50-60. The process is considerable hassle free. They can also do the wiring for you for a price (around SGD 80-100).

I can understand this is frustrating as it can be, welcome to Singapore. Trust me, along the way you would want your own line if you have a constant computer/internet usage.

Just one thing to note. Wifi is not that touchy. The obviously illegal sites they have a very well protected firewall from the Government, that even blocked some famous porn sites even it is legal to browse here in Singapore. This country has all the bubble wraps before you think of it so no wifi is not at all a problem to the house owner.

But to my experience this kind of house owner they tend to obtain unfiltered information from the always scared and paranoid Singaporean friends and family and hence the change of her mind. Just my wild guess.

I've worked in IT. Having had a friend go to prison for what he looked at online in Singapore I wouldn't put this in the category of urban myths but actual risks.

You underestimated the ability of SG government in putting the "right person" in prison. Period.
