Made to measure stuff - help me please!

Post by Boat Boy » Wed, 06 Jun 2018 3:14 pm

Hi there,

Newbie to Singapore here, and in an unusual position.

Probably here for a few years, so as a fob to middle-age and a general dislike of living in tower blocks, I bought a second hand boat as my home. Plenty of fun, something to do at the weekends and if I'm here a couple of years at minimum, I've basically got a free boat instead of paying someone rent.

However, it has come with a few things I hadn't considered, e.g. the boat's an american build, so electricity is 110v. This I've sorted with a step down transformer and by buying electrical equipment out of Japan.

So I've got everything working fine, and the boat is comfortable, so obviously I now need to find other ways to spend my money :D

Result is I'm looking at bedding and carpet. Now both of these are non-standard, the bed is an irregular wedge shape as it's in the front of the boat, and the carpet is very, very irregular, complete with holes in it to accommodate floor-mounted tables.

Anybody out there ever had these custom made? I know it's a bit off the wall, but I'm hoping some kind soul can pipe up with a suggestion or two.

Many thanks!

Try Alex at Summit Marine. Where do you keep the boat and what are the mooring fees?
I not lawyer/teacher/CPA.
You've been arrested? Law Society of Singapore can provide referrals.
You want an International School job? School website or http://www.ISS.edu
Your rugrat needs a School? Avoid for profit schools
You need Tax advice? Ask a CPA
You ran away without doing NS? Shame on you!

Cheers, maybe should have been a bit clearer. The moment you add "marine" into the mix, watch the price double :(

Bog standard carpet, cotton bedsheet and mattress protector just tailored to measure because of the odd shapes. No need for specialist boat stuff.

I'll try my luck a bit longer before I bite the bullet and start coughing up big bucks.

To answer your questions, I've got her moored at Raffles Marina, a bit far from civilisation, but I work in Tuas, so it makes sense. Berthing is a bit under $800 a month as under 42ft and I get free sunsets to enjoy over a cold one \:D/

What you want probably exists, the problem is finding it. For example, there are many small shops that make all kinds of stuff in the area I've delineated in the map, below. But, they all have such exciting and descriptive names like "Tan Hock Trading" which tells you absolutely nothing about the business. Websites? Surely, you jest.

Besides the area on the map, they are several other light industrial areas in Singapore, and the only way I know how to find suppliers is with the best search I can do for suppliers, then make a SWAG as to where they might be, then physically go visit, drive up and down the streets until I find what I need. I did this to find a specialty aluminum supplier to find the stuff I needed to build a custom golf bag mount for my motorcycle.

This one says they make boat mattresses.

Some carpet shops along Orchard.

Thanks for that. Tied up this weekend with first part of getting my boat license, but I'll head over to Orchard for a look-see next week
