Mum was Singaporean citizen

Hi,

My mother was a Singaporean citizen by birth but we have moved as a family in 2000 to Australia. She has since become an Australian citizen as have all her kids and has had to renounce her Singaporean citizenship (Singapore does not allow dual citizenship). I am wondering would I be able to apply for a Singaporean citizenship as an Australian who's mother was a Singaporean citizen?

If you were a male, and if you had ever enjoyed some SG benefits before you renounced your SG citizenship without serving NS, very likely that you will never be able to get anything more just a tourist visa to SG.

Citizenship via ancestry is only available for infants. You'd need to have been registered within weeks of birth. Furthermore back then it was only available to children of Singapore fathers. Mothers were not included in the constitutional language.

If he or she was born in Singapore with at least one parent as Singaporean citizen, the gender specific issue would not apply.

If he or she was born outside of Singapore before 2004, his father had to be a Singaporean citizen in order for him to get Singapore citizenship.

How old are you this year? The Singapore Government will not give special preferences to ex-Singaporeans. If you wish to obtain Singapore Citizenship, you will go through the same route as the other foreigners.

The first step is to obtain employment with a Singapore-registered entity and hold a valid work pass, i.e., SPass / Employment Pass (EP) / Personalised Employment Pass (PEP). Should your monthly basic salary be at least S$6,000/month, you will be eligible to apply for dependent's passes (DP) for your family members to move to Singapore with you.

Once you have worked and resided in Singapore for at least a year, you will be eligible for Permanent Residence (PR). The PR application process is quite a long drawn one and may stretch to one (1) year. Application is based on merits of the case and not automatic.

Upon the approval and completing 2 years minimum as a Singapore PR, you may then apply for Singapore Citizenship. Similar to the PR application, the Citizenship application process is long and may easily stretch above one (1) year. Again, the application is based on your personal merits and conduct during your stay in Singapore as a PR.

Lastly, should your Citizenship be granted In-Principal Approval (IPA), you will need to give up your existing Citizenship (i.e., Australia) in order to complete the formalities for your Citizenship application. This is in line with Section 126(1) under "General Provisions as to registration" of the Singapore Constitution which states, "No person shall be registered as a citizen of Singapore under Article 123 until he has taken the Oath of Renunciation, Allegiance and Loyalty in the form set out in the Second Schedule.", with Article 123 being "Citizenship by Registration"

You can apply for jobs in Singapore online and have interviews arranged via Skype or physical interviews with your potential employers. This really depends on your industry, experience, qualifications and skill sets.
