Relocation from Singapore to Canada

Post by annetheseira » Fri, 18 May 2018 1:47 pm

Hello all!

Need some help.......i am currently living in Singapore with my husband and three kids, but my husband just got relocated to Canada and i'm a little lost with this....not sure which relocation company to use. Would like to engage a relocation company that has relatively low costs!

Thank you!!

I would pay the costs for a highly reputable company.

Too many things potentially getting lost, broken or impounded by customs for tax would annoy me.

You will want to ensure that the company you hire has agents that work for the company in both countries, or, at the very least, that they have long time relationships with moving and packing companies in both countries. You will also want to make sure that the company handles all shipping and customs issues.

Your nightmare starts when you hire a local company with no real relationship in the destination country. They pack your stuff up here. Then they take your boxes to a freight forwarder who is supposed to get your boxes into a container and onto the correct ship. Already you have a problem... your packer will tell you that you need to talk to the freight forwarder... they wash their hands.

And then, at the destination country, who is going to be responsible for unloading the container and shepherding it through customs? Who is going to store it? Who is going to get it on a truck and delivered to your house when you are ready?

Yes, you can find some real cheap operators and you will regret it. Choose only those who can guarantee end to end service for your shipment.

Agree. SF handled my relocation from Shanghai to Singapore. It was a very smooth experience without any issue.

Hi-
6 years ago I shipped everything from Singapore to Vancouver Canada using "Seven Seas". They were great. Everything arrived intact, and I though the prices was very reasonable.

Hi Rob! Glad to see you are still poking your head in here from time to time! (If you didn't catch it somewhere in here, I actually went ahead and retired early (Mar) at 71.5 yrs. Figured the heck with it. But I'm still here in Singapore.

Is there anything you regret not taking back or wish you had taken back Rob? Old chinese furniture or antiques or whatever?
I not lawyer/teacher/CPA.
You've been arrested? Law Society of Singapore can provide referrals.
You want an International School job? School website or http://www.ISS.edu
Your rugrat needs a School? Avoid for profit schools
You need Tax advice? Ask a CPA
You ran away without doing NS? Shame on you!

I still poke my head in time to time, SMS. It is nice to keep up with trends in Singapore although I really do like being where I am. Retiring at 71.5 is not early :)

PNGMK, I brought everything I wanted back to the States. My 10 boxes of teacher related stuff remained, since I am happily retired.
