Second Generation PR - confusion over the term

Post by PNGMK » Sat, 17 Mar 2018 9:29 am

Is this correct? It's a source of confusion.

A second generation PR is (I believe) a child born to a person who is ALREADY a PR.

If you apply for PR as a mother/father and your child is included in the application, that child is a first generation PR on his own merit. He does not incur a NS obligation.
I not lawyer/teacher/CPA.
You've been arrested? Law Society of Singapore can provide referrals.
You want an International School job? School website or http://www.ISS.edu
Your rugrat needs a School? Avoid for profit schools
You need Tax advice? Ask a CPA
You ran away without doing NS? Shame on you!

It probably should be read as 2nd gen *coma* PR .

https://www.ica.gov.sg/visitor/PR/visitor_PR_becomeapr
"Under the Enlistment Act, all male Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents, unless exempted, are liable to register for National Service (NS).
[..]
Main applicants who are granted PR status under the Professionals/Technical Personnel and Skilled Workers Scheme or the Investor Scheme, are exempted from NS.

Male applicants who are granted PR status as a Foreign Student or under their parents’ sponsorship are liable for NS under the Enlistment Act. "

Yes, I did some more research. I've always known a son (born to me as a PR and a PR as a result) has an obligation but where this has come up is for families applying with boys who are close to NS age. They asked - rightly - why their sons would not be 1st gen PR in their own right. However even if they are - a boy who gets PR under 18 doesn't get a NS exemption (as I did at 23).
