Yes, I did some more research. I've always known a son (born to me as a PR and a PR as a result) has an obligation but where this has come up is for families applying with boys who are close to NS age. They asked - rightly - why their sons would not be 1st gen PR in their own right. However even if they are - a boy who gets PR under 18 doesn't get a NS exemption (as I did at 23).
