You are a dreamer. running, long walks or climbing stairs is NOT good for losing weight without changing your diet. Additionally, if, as the OP indicated, they are very fat they could even do more damage than they are already doing by the weight to their knees and feet joints. Impact exercises multiplies the impact on those joints by many multiples and could lead to permanent damage to the joints as well as possibly giving the person a cardiac arrest if they are too heavy. What you suggest is good to toning up the muscles and staying fit and should not be used to try to lose weight.
