runaway girl

I've met a Philippines girl who say she ran away from her abusive employer recently. Does anyone know what mihgt happen to her? I suggested she go to her embassy, or even police. Would they just send her out, or throw her in jail?

You should ask the maid to go to the police to makea report, they will make investigations and if it is true that the employer has abused the maid, he/she would mostly probably land in jail, not the maid..

She says she's scared and that even if there is a case against them, she is still illegal because she ran away, thus will be punished as well as being sent back.

agree with above -- she should really contact the police via phone to understand her rights, and any action of help that can be given to her..if she is scared, she can do so anonymously...maybe contacting the maid agency could help too...

maid abuse is definitely not to be put up with.

The Philippeno embassy has a half way house for runnaway maids. If you ring the embassy (phone number in the directory or on the net) and ask for the half way house. I suspect she would not be punished for running away but she will be sent home as she is no longer working here. She will be punished if she is picked up by the police now though. I suggest you speak to the embassy.
