Experience vs education

Post by ssander » Wed, 27 Dec 2017 2:20 pm

Hi everyone!
I'm in SG with a LTVP and I've been looking for a job for about 5 months without any luck. I have a Bachelor's degree in Energy Engineering and have finished most of my Master's studies in the same field. I have about a years worth of experience in Energy Engineering but more than 3 years as a Desktop Support Engineer.
So here's my question. Should I be looking for positions in the energy sector that is related to my studies or rather the IT sector where I have experience in? Is it even realistic to look for engineering positions if I don't have much experience yet?

I can't speak to energy engineering but I can tell you that desktop support technicians are going the way of the dodo bird.

95 percent of break fix problems resolution is being done remotely with a variety of support tools. If the hardware is really broken, it's swapped out by a delivery boy with enough knowledge to turn it on and connect it. Break fix repairs are done elsewhere.

Also, it would appear that the gahmen has targeted the IT sector as being a good place for recent SG graduates to make a career start. Witness the many threads in the forums of foreigners unable to obtain EP's for contract IT support positions.
