Interview - Job gap

Post by juann14 » Mon, 09 Oct 2017 1:00 am

Hi, I hope someone can help me regarding my situation.

I'd my first job as a Chemist from July 2015 - March 2017. And then, I got my second job as a Laboratory Technologist but I work for awhile from May 2017 -June 2017. My second job is more related to my field of study which is Biomedical Science. However, I left because I was being treated very unfairly by other colleagues. My supervisor also not a supportive when I joined in. And the work is quite a very fast paced environment and I realised I slower than other colleagues.
So, I quit my second job because I feel really stress and feel the job is not a right fit for me. I left without having another job.

Should I write my second job in my resume? Do I need to tell the interviewer about my second job?
What reason should I give to the interviewer about the job gap? What should I say when the interviewer ask what are you doing during the unemploment period? I still unemploy until now from June 2017.

Please help me.
Thanks.

How old are you ?

Bad mouthing the previous work place is never healthy.

Most employers will take it as you are not able to fit into a team, not that you been vicitimised.

I been in that situation, where my team leader told me this : "You are too old for this job. Why don't you find a job that fits your age ?? "

Not going into his actual ulterior motives .. but that sucks.

If I had brought this up at the next place of employment, it would have 99% made me look bad.

Yes, you need to declare your employment.

No, you dont' say why you left.

What did you do during the gap ? Studied ? Self improved ?

So, what should I say?
My second job is more towards working in clinical laboratory in healthcare environment, conduct blood analyses. I change to this job because I want to have experience working in this line. I don’t have any internship exposure or experience working in this type of environment during my study years. So, I grabbed the opportunity. However, after working for few months, I found out that I not suitable for this kind of environment. The volume samples is too much and I cannot catchup with the speed. Most of the work require automation and handling machines but I prefer to have a work that more to hands-on.
My first job as a Chemist is more to hands-on lab work and bit off handling instrument. And I also work in the lab doing food and urine analyses.
I have upcoming interview as Microbiologist. I need this job badly. It will great for me since I enjoy microbiology experiment during my study. However, I only have lab skill exposured during my final year project and practical experiment.

Please help me to give suitable reason why I quit my second job so fast. Should I telling the truth? After I quit my second, I have been actively seeking for a job. I have been staying at home for few months. What I should tell them if they ask what I have been doing for this few months? ?

The lab environment in Singapore is indeed fast-paced, with automation being a major driver. However, I would say you need to examine why it is a fast-paced environment - the majority of blood samples to be tested are for sick patients. The clinicians are dependent on quick turnaround of results to make important decisions which may save a life. By signing up to join the healthcare environment, you take the charge to have some lives in your hand.

Some labs have more esoteric tests that require hands on work - mass spec or molecular testing. Perhaps those would be more appropriate for your pace.

Regardless, it helps to be honest to prospective employers to set the expectation of your working style, otherwise you risk being put into similar paced environments which will do your career no good.

As for inactivity during he last few months, I hope you can show you have been improving a skill set in some way.
