Potentially relocating mid-October - where to live?

Hi everyone,
Trying to get all my ducks in order with not a whole-lot of time to do so.
I'll have a max budget (all-in) of about SGD$1,750 and I'll be working on Anson Road, right next to the Tanjong Pagar MRT (East West Line).
Hoping for a sub-30 minute commute door-to-door and a decent area for an expat relocating for at least two years by myself. Hoping for a decent condo, shared apartment. I'm 30 and currently living in London, so still keen on somewhere with some life!
So my two questions:
- any recommendations for nice areas? River Vallye/Orchard and Tiong Bahru look OK?
- is that a realistic budget?
A note that I've never been to Singapore before, so I'm going on Google maps and blog posts alone!
