NCD - Is UK one valid here?

Post by soulsearching » Mon, 14 Aug 2017 8:49 am

Hi all,

need a quick advice! I have had 10 years+ No Claims in the UK and have a letter to prove it! lol

However, now that am about to buy a car here, do you think it can be used here with any insurance company? That will be a big big saver. As I have heard 5 years NCD is over 50% here!

Any feedback will be much appreciated.

regards,
Tim

I disagree (very unusual) with taxico. Some insurance companies will offer you some NCD if you have proof of NCD from overseas (not the full amount - in my case 10% on a 40% NCD from memory). USE AN INSURANCE broker or the car dealer to help - don't go direct to the companies.

fair enough...

this was 2010'ish:

i approached INCOME and directasia directly but both rejected my overseas NCD for motorcycles.

this chap (broker from the used car dealer IIRC) said no dice, but was happy to accept my overseas NCD as proof that i had no accidents in the 3 years prior or i would not get any insurance.

no NCD extended. 50% off would have paid for much petrol.

so... aptly - your mileage may vary.

Yes, they are:

If you are a foreigner / expatriate living in Singapore,
you may be entitled to a NCD, if you can provide a letter from your last insurance company stating that you've been insured over the last 12 months and the number of "claim-free" years.

In 2007 when I moved from KL with NCD letter/proof which was basically just my last policy, INCOME here gave me their full 50% discount. I've since changed car and insurance to AVIVA but my INCOME broker, at the time, was very helpful.

Today, still, insurance companies CAN take your NCD letter and do with it what they want.

I think what you said earlier may still apply for number of cases. "You may be entitled". I am pretty sure this "may" may heavily depend on (1) the premium to be paid; (2) the country of the previous NCD record; (3) the vehicle earlier insured of the NCD. It's all about the risk management.

This is to confirm that UK NCD is fully admissible here and I just got 50% NCD applied on my Car Insurance. That's the max discount applied here in Singapore post 5 years of NCD

NTUC, but all the insurers told me the same thing. DirectAsia, Aviva etc.

Dear OP

off topic - Have you returned your UK licence back to DVLC?
