Income tax in Singapore

Post by kondalinbox » Tue, 23 May 2017 12:23 pm

Hi Team, I need some help in understanding the tax rules in Singapore.

I was working in Singapore for last 2 years on Employment Pass, due to personal need I came to India on Sept 2016 and will be here till July 2017. Even though I'm in India, my payroll and every thing is from Singapore. Just that I'm working from Home. Considering my scenario, as I'm not staying in Singapore for more than 183 days in the year 2017, will I be considered as Tax resident or non-resident for the assessment year 2018?

2015 Feb - 2016 Sept - Working in Singapore on EP
Sept 20th, 2016 to July 25th, 2017 - Working from Home(India) for Singpaore Company, I'm staying here on personal need.
From July 25th, 2017 to Dec 31,2017 - I'll physically stay in Singpaore on EP.

I’m holding Employment Pass till Jan 2018 and I paid income tax for assessment year 2016 and 2017 as a tax resident.

My major concern here is, My physical stay in Singapore would be less than 183 days in 2017, so will I be considered as tax resident or non-resident?

Answers may vary, but for IRAS, you file the tax, if you got paid in Singapore, under an EP.

If you are trying to say if you are getting resident or non-resident rates.

Thanks for your response ecureilx.

Am I going to be tax resident or non-tax resident for the assessment year 2018 would be unclear for me.

I've gone through this, but couldn't get into conclusion.

maybe somebody can correct me but if you are on EP, you are considered Resident.

One thing is, IRAS rarely like to be double guessed.

So you file and pray you get the lowest tax.

Generally speaking, if you are still on a valid employment pass that covers the entire period, then in all probability you will still pay taxes on resident rates.

totally agree on this.
plus especially if your preferred currency is a lot different from singapore dollars.

like 100 yen is just $1.20 or 100,000 rupiah or rupee..
it is going to be a headache for DIY
