For me going back home gives me the sense of belonging. Earlier we used to go to India every year. Now we have increased the frequency to twice a year.
For me it is a bit like a dect phone. You can place it whereever you want the whole day but you need to place it on the base station for charging it, at regular intervals.

It's familiar, comfortable and the friendliness of the people always surprises. But it can be insular, limiting and so damn cold. I've been abroad for 30 years, moving back would be quite some transition.

I have only physically been abroad. Mentally still in India, so the adjustment is much easier. After I leave Singapore, I will have lots of memories, but no real connections whatsoever.

I guess the 1st question is what is the (your) definition of home.
For me, as the 6th generation in my small village in Wales it’s easy. No argument.
On June 1st I go for my annual 2 week holiday there. Do I get emotional? No. I like it there but I also like it here in Singapore. So I am moderately happy flying west and same coming back. I often think it’s sad that people come to Asia for the wrong reason, feel homesick etc. Not a good space to be in.
Of course, put into perspective, both my parents and all uncles/aunties now dead. No kids/never married, 2 brothers only, lost touch with 95% of childhood friends. In fact my 2 best friends (I knew for 40 years) have also died (young, 45, 64).
Can’t think of anything more to say.

I just came back from a quick vacation to India. Mainly Bangalore and Udupi. My wife has some digestion problems. In Singapore we were not able to diagnose it for 1 whole year. Finally this vacation we went to Manipal hospital in Udupi and in 2 days we did all kinds of test like colonoscopy, abdominal ultrasound, blood tests etc and it appears to be no complications and mostly irritable bowel syndrome. All these tests cost like Rs 10k(~S$200). In Singapore it would cost a bomb and we will be roaming around hospitals forever.
So my take is, when everything is good, Singapore is good. But in case of even slight medical emergency, I would prefer India any day.

Sorry Raj, please feel free to bring the topic back on track. Or moderators, do you want to split up the thread?

I think that it's a nice idea, of course if your homeland doesn't bring you too bad memories
