You mean the shoe guy that took such a small amount of explosive it wouldn't have done much damage, and was stopped by other patrons before anything could happen?

There is a proven example of people with checked weapons shooting people at the terminal but they ban kindles.

Realistically getting something onto a plane is not *that* hard. Its getting the conspiracy to stay around and not get caught before some patsy (normally below intelligence) can perform the act and do enough damage to make a difference is far more difficult.

The term is "security theater" they need to be seen to be doing something to make people think things are safe rather than actually doing something about it. Also there is the "if some other idiot took on a shoe bomb why didnt they do something about it" syndrome, even though the treatment is worse than the risk.

To really do something about it the US needs to not pay minimum wage to some uneducated guy in a uniform, but to focus on information gathering and working with marginalized communities.

Good thing is, most of the time, this uneducated guy is also at the other side. It's sort of similar with committing a perfect crime - few people that have the ability, rarely are motivated to commit one.

But I would not laugh at the shoe soles and such - surely they can do enough damage, but again, it's all about the risk/situation management, rather then prevention of any specific threat.

What this really is is a petty, vindictive action taken by Trump and his cronies, whom, if they can't get their travel ban in place (and they can't) will try to inflict as much inconvenience as possible on travelers from Muslim countries.

Why have the UK followed - that 'special relationship'? Anyway I hope that's all it is, I don't want this to spread, I like my laptop on the flight, it spares me from the inflight entertainment.

I am travelling to UK on Emirates in 3 weeks , doesn't look like Dubai is on the UK black list at the minute.

How will the US/UK enforce airlines to prevent passengers taking such devices on planes?

Will they have folk walking up n down the plane checking?

Also what they gonna do if someone walks off the place with a tablet in UK/US?

I reckon this is one of the weirder and likely more counter-productive bans. With all those wonky batteries in the wild, I'm not so sure that keeping passengers' devices in the cargo hold is necessarily a safer option.

And if this ban includes drones, heads up; last thing you want is unescorted, inaccessible Lipos.

You do not want to check in your laptop with the luggage. It is too fragile to withstand the rough handling. I tried that once and would never do it again.

I just flew through Maldives and Colombo last week........both didn't even require taking liquids (large, albeit water only) and laptop out my backpack.

Credit due, Maldives did do a double scan but Colombo not.

Colombo only told me (and my 10yr old) to remove shoes.

Flying through Korea is a complete opposite......almost to the point of stripping off and have a hand shove out of the sunshine. They take their scanning very seriously.

The electronic device that blew a hole in an African airliner recently was due, solely, to errors in scanning hand baggage at the airport and likely poor training or equipment. I believe this has less to do with terrorism and more to do with American airline protection. Why the UK is following suit is the oddest thing in all this, not the fact America and Trump did it.
