It's really not an easy decision for you and your family, and definitely not one to be taken lightly. It'll be helpful for you and wife to think 10-20 years in the future, or when your son is your age, what might be the best outcome. Ultimately this differs for every family and individual so we can't prescribe, only advise :)

IMO I am not sure Singapore has a clear forward path into the future, there are a lot of issues the country need to overcome. I would look to Australia for a 'safer' future and Singapore for a riskier but possibly more rewarding future.
I not lawyer/teacher/CPA.
You've been arrested? Law Society of Singapore can provide referrals.
You want an International School job? School website or http://www.ISS.edu
Your rugrat needs a School? Avoid for profit schools
You need Tax advice? Ask a CPA
You ran away without doing NS? Shame on you!

OP, you think too much

No matter how much you plan, it can go either way

You cannot bake the cake and eat it yourself. Ain't gonna happen hombre.

Plan you should, decide you must but tell yourself this

Whichever route you take, it is a one way ticket with no U turn. Damn , I was one of the people who set up this guideline.

My take

Do not register your son SC. when he is born.
Less complication and he can apply EP on his own merits

You folks go and apply for AUS citizenship. Those folks at Canberra keeps on shifting the goal post when comes to immigration.

VERY VERY good point - get your aussie citizenship before Canberra sets the fee at $50,000 each.

Specific points:

1. Yes I have been told that I over think things. Well I am product of Singapore's kiasu culture after all

2. Would you like to expand on this? Am wondering if u have a little more knowledge about the inside workings of ICA..

3. Thanks for your suggestion, which was my original thinking too. But from subsequent posts and what I have gathered online, the consensus seems to be that even getting an EP in the future would be difficult for my unborn son given that anyone in ICA can see that a child of two Singaporeans born overseas have decided not to register their son for SC, did so to avoid NS. From your experience in immigration.. Is this true?

Lastly, I agree that Australia has a stable future and agree even more that Singapore, whilst has more hurdles to jump as a small nation, has potentially better prospects.. I heard that it is harder to get SPR/SC than AusPR/C for now.. (eg. to migrate here, u only need a sponsor to hire you on a full time basis to be awarded an EP, regardless of skill/income).. Though Australia keeps changing her mind about these rules.

only if born *within* Australia to a pr or citizen, apparently.

I wasn't aware citizenship was extended to children of PR's
