Hi guys,
My first post here.
Going to visit my Chinese Singaporean girlfriend's family. Use to meet her mother (gift given already) before and going to meet her father for the 1st time.
Heard that her father is the key. For the gifts wise, do you guys have any recommedations for father?
In China, alcohol & cigarettes to father is the norm, but I feel they're considered unhealthy & weird in Singapore, is that true? What people usually give here? Hope to be descent, neither too cheap nor costly. Thanks.

Depends on the Father in Law , what sort of social activities does he have?
Is he traditional type?
Where do they live?
everything contribute to what might be a decent gift.

no cigarettes. the wife and daughter would not approve!
depending on how old her father is... 3 options that tend to go down well with 50+ chinese folks (IMO):
chicken essence
bird's nest (bottled sort, but not the budget $1.50/can variety)
benedictine dom
any younger than 49 and you might want to consider a bottle of red wine in place of benedictine dom.
pinot noir's always easy to quaff and not too pricey...

Is it only my impression that local Chinese males reaching certain age are very much into the XO stuff?

If the Govt is to be believed they are also very interested in younger women from China.
Until the TS gives some clues on the background to the Father in Law then I am not sure we can give any valid suggestions.

My observations are actually based on what I typically see being purchased at the duty free for the arriving flights.

Isnt that place full of hipster wine bars and eateries?
Similar style to Duxton , once a bit dodgy , now high end dining

Thanks for the suggestions from you. I'm a guy from China and the father is kind intellectual & professional man.
I think the bird nest or red wine are really good options.

Or perhaps a subscription to the Chinese equivalent of the Economist or other paper/online source of news that isn't your normal low brow stuff.

Tangs has a nice selection of household, home décor items, flowers, if you are intending to do gifting. They have an online shop now.

Since they're your friends, you can give them a gift that you think they need or will use every day :) Practical but functional.
