LTPV holder how to get a job?

Post by andrea85 » Wed, 22 Feb 2017 12:00 am

Hello,
I'm a LTVP holder and I would like to find a job in Singapour since my husband will be there from April.
I have a Master degree in economics and 5 years experience in multinational companies.
I read on the gov site (http://www.mom.gov.sg/passes-and-permit ... /key-facts) that with the LTVP it is possible to work there (you have to find one of course) and there is no foreign worker levy or quota required (that seems good news).
My questions are:
1. How easy is to find a job for LTVP holders? Are there someone that can share their experiences?
2. Do companies are confident with LTVPs and how easily they can change it to an employer visa?
3. Can I open a bank account or sign a rental contract?

Thank you very much for the help
Roberta

lot of small employers consider LTVP holders as cheap Labour, as they are supplementary wage wage earners. Search, unless you have skills and qualification to demand good pay (what's your experience and expertise ?)

some yes, a lot, no.

Hi!
Thank you very much for your answer!
What do you mean by "cheap labor"? Do you have some suggestions for web portals with jobs offers (maybe more open also to expats)?

Thanks!
Andrea

It means they like to employ them in low-wage positions that they'd otherwise have to pay worker levy on top of salary to bring in someone on a work permit.

However ... my (somewhat limited) experience is if you have MNC experience and good credentials (and at first reading, it seems it may be the case) your likely to be converted to an EP by any potential employer, particularly MNC or white collar position. They do this to insure they won't suddenly have someone who is unemployable if their spouse for some reason loses their ability to work in Singapore.

If you post a little bit of info on your work experience, you may get better answers.

ok thank you!
I'm 30 yo and I worked for 2 years in Hasbro as a brand manager (toys industry), then for 3 years and half in Ferrero (Food Company), firstly as a project manager and now in the CEO's office as a strategic internal consultant.

My experience is in MNC but I would like to try to work in a cultural organization/arts museum since it has always been my passion. Any suggestion?
Many thanks!
Andrea

The museum scene is growing in Singapore. No doubt about that.

If you are serious about museums, then the very first thing you are going to want to do is hook up with Friends of the Museums... http://fom.sg/

Yes, this is a volunteer organization, and, it covers multiple museums, and if you have any expectation of actual employment, you would need to undertake at least one docent program and guide tours.

My wife was active in FOM for many years... took fabulous trips to Bhutan, Silk Road, and more.

FOM? flee!

that's a cess pit of female politics, bickering, factions and passive aggressive cattiness.

there is also nearly no chance any museum would pay to hire an expat FOM volunteer unless she has the necessary experience and qualifications.

(sorry eagle. just my 2c...)

OP: it's a very niche area in singapore. there're at least 3 museum volunteer groups in singapore, but they were never meant for career development... good luck!

i have no vested interest in FOM, nor any interest in the factions within. i'm telling you what i've heard from 2014 until... today, 2017.

perhaps it may have been fine and dandy some years ago (and before), but it's no longer the case.

you are free to disagree with me because you've not heard from your wife about it - let's just leave it at that because i have nothing more to add to this FOM topic.

In the Terms and Conditions for the FOM are these rules:

The first rule of FOM is: you do not talk about FOM. The second rule of FOM is: you DO NOT talk about Fight Club in the FOM! Third rule of the FOM Fight Club: someone yells "stop!", goes limp, taps out, the fight is over. Clearly someones wife didn't read the rules.
