She is only human. It was desperation that drove her to commit a crime and think irrationally

not singing praise about SG gov but as a citizen, there are lots of ways to seek help, other than stealing. Ways that are not open to non citizens

PS. Not running it In , but change "commit A crime" to "commit the same crime 3 times .. " :(

Personally, I don't think it was desperation, but more like stupidity or she has a psychological disorder that is causing her compulsion to steal.

It could be so. But then again, i am not her. I pity her for doing so. She wasnt aware that she can apply for social help. She thought that was only for single mothers and those living in one room flats. 7 years apart from her 3rd mistake. Is that still considered a compulsive thief?

if she was a true blue Singaporean, she would know the law here never forgets !

As for she didn't know about assistance - is it you or your friend who didn't know ? Even the most anti government person knows about community assistance by the govt.

You mean 7 years from what is known as her official record.
She was so desperate, yet when caught she offered to settle. How? Stealing again, or there was still some other source of money? Similarly to what the other poster said, if she was really desperate, she would have found a job, just probably not a job of her dreams.

If you really want to help her, stop making for her lame excuses. Nobody, especially the court, is going to believe in them. You are contributing to her problems.

Oh dear, i dont know how else to help her
Pay for her lawyer. Seriously that's the only thing that might actually help.
I not lawyer/teacher/CPA.
You've been arrested? Law Society of Singapore can provide referrals.
You want an International School job? School website or http://www.ISS.edu
Your rugrat needs a School? Avoid for profit schools
You need Tax advice? Ask a CPA
You ran away without doing NS? Shame on you!

I called Legal Aid yesterday. They told me that the case can be handled by Probono Law Society SG. Will tell her to go there after her meeting with her IO on 17 Jan 2017.

The probono guys are busying saving people from the noose or life in prison. I doubt they'll give her 5 mins of their time but if you CAN - at least see if you can get someone to agree to be with her and represent her in court.

Thank you forr advice, it really helps. Will convey that to her. On a side note, she just received news that her husband has secured a new job and due to start next monday. Should see inform her IO about that and bring along her husband's appointment letter? She is scared out of her wits that mcys will take away her daughter :(

Why not? It shows;

1. Her husband can hire an FDW to support the kids while she is in prison.
2. Her husband can hire a lawyer to defend her in court.

IT does nothing to show that she should have stolen but might act in mitigation.

maybe get her a job? or help her look for a good job.
help her draft a resume, teach her where to find jobs (classified, jobstreets, jobdirectory etc etc)

a good job will help her a loooong way
