Ignorance index

Post by x9200 » Fri, 16 Dec 2016 11:30 pm

... or perception gap index.

Something, I think, interesting but also very difficult to interpret without some better insight into the individual countries.

I can see why for China and Singapore. Both countries are govt by dictators who use social engineering tools, censorship and propaganda for mind control.

Every government uses such tools. The whole politics is just about it.
What is seen in the survey (it's worth to analyze the responses to the specific questions) is a convoluted image including the impact of:
- culture (good examples, the articles in the thread of the US president elect)
- religion (e.g. statistics lies, your priest knows better)
- education
- many other things

Or level of understanding and insight. I find well traveled expats, open to other cultures to be far more insightful of what the world really looks like.

That is why we shouldn't be judgemental simply based on some statistics or survey figures. It does not help in any conversation.

I find humor in this "Ignorance index" with the most populous democracy out ranking the largest communist state.

Because it reflects things that may only be loosely linked with the political system. For example, non-Islamic countries that are near to the problems with the Islamic radical fundamentalism will likely score bad in any question related to the population of Muslims. This is fear based and the fear can be fueled by free media but also equally well by some governmental propaganda.

And I would not get overexcited with the word "ignorance". This is mostly for the marketing. The whole survey is about perception.

Perception is the roots of all negativity
The positive thinker sees the invisible, feels the intangible, and achieves the impossible.Yahoo !!!

This is easily one of the most open-minded and worldly community that I found. Not only due to their exposure thru foreign cultures and travel but the mindsets of the people. We can all become stagnated by our immediate surroundings and social circles but what can set you apart is the willingness to look at events from a different set of lenses and others' POV.

I also visit sites frequent by Singaporeans living in the USA. Some have done the same and learn to appreciate that Americans just have a different cultural perpectives. While others are die-hard product of the Singapore Inc and Unrelenting System. Cocky know-it-all and the lack of humility just makes me dizzy. Their inflexibility! I am in US for almost 3 decades and still learning about the country, its people and its politics. Such a massive country with all its regional differences and nuances. There is so much to know and learn.

But what I know is this, I will never ever go back to mono-cultural living. Living and breathing and interpreting the world in only one way. My way or the highway. The oneness of it. The one-dimensional existence. It is very boring for me. So glad that I am exposed to and live in more than one country i.e. Singapore.

Anyway, I read survey results with a grain of salt. It is just a single number / rank / score / label. And of course, most of us know a single number does not capture the complete and holistic story. It is "single". The singleness of it all. The human existence is so much more complex and nuanced that it cannot be explained in a single label. People who are hang up with being number 1 and ranking e.g. must get A+++++++++ school grade, just goes to show how narrow-minded they are. How reductive it is, when you reduce another human being into a letter grade. It is an inhumane way of looking at other human beings.

You affirm your own humanity by acting humanely towards other human beings and life forms. When you treat another human humanely, you become more humane yourself. It is all done to benefit the "self".

"There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics." ~ Mark Twain
