female 36, single
What's the one thing you wish you knew before you moved?
What did you bring that you didn't really need?
Is this a good idea?? I'm thinking it is....
I have a couple hesitations. One being that I love my cooler weather and I'm a little nervous that I may melt. i know I will acclimate with time, but I literally will need a whole new wardrobe. I've also heard/read some not great stories about the dating scene. I'm sure everyone has a very different experience, so would love to hear yours.
I leave for Singapore tomorrow and will be there the week of Nov 12 for my look see trip as I make my decision. If anyone is up for a coffee, let me know

Re: Look/see visit to Singapore
As a married guy who spent eight years in Singapore, I can't say that I know much about dating in Singapore. However, I do have a few observations as to why a 36 year old foreign female might find the dating climate somewhat difficult.nikmo25 wrote:female 36, single

It has everything to do with the large availability of sex from many different races of young women and the presence of lots and lots of working girls who are not looked down upon as they might be in the USA.
So, if you take the average married guy who might be looking for a little on the side, you're probably not going to take him up on the offer of casual sex, and he probably wouldn't press you too hard because one of the working darlings out there will take care of all his needs.
And, a lot of the single men who come here really find the nightlife a Disneyland experience... bars, music, and girls... lots of girls. In my view, most of these gents aren't too interested in anything serious... drink, dance, f*ck... and do it all over again tomorrow night.
That's not to say that people don't form serious relationships... they do. I think if you take the attitude of joining groups of people, either from work, or condo, or from this board, for the purposes of having a fun night out, you'll meet someone you might click with. But, if you're 36, with a ticking clock and are looking for the serious "one", things might be a little bit different for the reasons I have mentioned above.

I would still think the main issues for a Western minded women are the cultural differences. Local culture is deeply patriarchal and this is not the only problem with the local males.
Unless of course, the target are the expats, then I tend to agree with SE.

I'm from the USA - born and raised in Ohio and have been living in Seattle for some time.
@ SE - what I have heard aligns with what you are saying. I'm not moving here to hunt for a husband by any means, but three years is a long time. That's all. I'm more interesting in meeting smart, fun people and just enjoying my experience for what it is.

Re: Look/see visit to Singapore
I am certainly not trying to dissuade you... Singapore is a great place to live. And over the eight years that I contracted into various foreign companies, I met quite a few foreign women that were attractive, intelligent, and very desirable... Germans, Australians, British... even a few Americans. I would say that the men (or women) that did go out with these women were a cut above, themselves.
I would tend to agree with x9200 about a patriarchal society that has men both fearful and uncertain of strong of strong women while having this idea of a societal pecking order that is the man, the dog, then the woman.
