It is still the best way. There are real world skills that no one teaches you. You have to get your hands dirty - having someone spoon feed you is the worst way to pick up those skills. Most notably when you don't get the desired results, you learn how to do the root cause analysis and troubleshooting by being self taught - so the process of teaching yourself, will help develop the right kind of skills.
