Is SGD 3k per month OK?

Postby sampath » Thu, 03 Feb 2005 10:07 pm

I am, having 8+ post qualified experience, an electrical engineer in India. If I am offered 3K per month can I enjoy a reasonable family life in Singapore? I have a 4 year old kid need to send him school as well. Please advice me. No need to spend lavishly.

I think $3K for a single or couple is fine... but with 4 kids, it would be very difficult (from my opinion).

May be you can negotiate with your company because you have 8+ years experience.

$3000! That is a pittance. A fresh Singapore grad gets that much a month! You definitely need to ask for more!

Can survive

here is rough idea:

SGD 850/month 3-room flat
150 utilities+telephone
100 mobile phone for 2 people
food+living 800
School going kid (only one u have) may cost you abt 600

So total is 2500.

SO you can survive easily in 3k, though it doesnot match your experience.

Accepting a lower salary is pittance , because if you start with $3000 , you are underselling yourself.

I guess in India you can easily make Rs.50000 Per month and still save Rs.25000 after all expenses.

Since you have Kid , please think of education. In India You can send the Kid to the best school.

Dude , Gone are the days where you need to go Abroad to earn money.

In your $3000 you can save max of $500 provided you live on Shoe string budget and worrying about the darn visa .Think about coming back to India once in 2 years which is (1000 dollars * 3).

Unless you get $5000 /month , i dont think any point in moving.

Thank you very much for all of yours advice. I think it is not a good idea to come Singapore for that salary. I should ask more as saving SGD 500 is not enough. I can save more than that living in India. Thank you.

No, fresh engineering grads would be very lucky to make even $2000.

Still, S$3000 is not much for a family of 3. Ask for more.
