Company paying lower than stated EP salary

Hi all

So I got my EP (temp, with real EP card in the post for next week) which declares on the paperwork that the company will be paying me 5k per month.

However what happens if the company says,

"we had to write 5k to get the EP"... "we cant actually pay you that".... "we can only pay you 3k"

I understand the company can get in trouble for doing that, but thats up to them, its their company not mine, but would I also get in trouble?

I know most of you will say, to tell them to pay me 5k but if they won't then 3k is better than no job and no EP. At least ill be getting work experience for the CV and its always easier to find a job once you have a job, applying for a jobs from a position of strength, rather than applying for jobs when I don't have job and I'm not even in the country makes it almost impossible to find a job here in Singapore.

Any advice of what to do in this situation

This is a reality of many EP's. Sorry but it is. IT is very common. The only issue that arises really is when it comes to tax time. You must insist that your employer pay tax on the $5k/mth for you. And sometimes, as they come to know and trust you, the income goes up to the full amount in any event. But what usually happens is that you are paid the $3K and then the $2k is declared as accommodation, training, equipment etc

IANAL (I am not a Lawyer) but if it were me and I felt I had no option but to sign, I would record it and say for (your) recording that you are signing it under duress as you have no other option.

I would have the talk about actually paying you 5K and listen to what they say, them ask them to explain the legality of that to you. You then at least have some plausible deniability. Asking for 4K cask and they pay you 1K in training costs mean the tax position does not impact you as much and you get more per month.

Finally, and as a last resort, I would consider creating a fake email account somewhere outside of Singapore using a small provider (I have used fastmail.fm in the past) and drop a no names email to MOM which depending on the outcome of that may buy you time if the spit hits the fan.
