I drove for Uber last night so you tards could ask me questions

Since surge was quietly shunned, I've noticed fares are generally higher than before. I can't think of any reason to use Uber when competitors are significantly cheaper.

Do you get notification of an area surging in interest still?

As a driver? Yes. Uber is IME still cheaper than City/Comfort. I took a comfort today and had forgotten how painful the experience is. Paper receipts, surly bitch of a driver, mischarging, didn't want to take credit card. What would have been a $16 far in Uber as $26 by the time that bastard taxi uncle was done.

I hear you pngmk, its an all too woefully familiar scene, plus the complimentary jerky rides.. If you are on PIE at 1:00 am why the fck would someone want to weave between 4 lanes driving at 100kmph?

You can use Grab to take standard taxis and eliminate some of the payment issues, have a credit card linked to your account it pays from that automatically and emails you the receipt. Doesn't make it cheaper or fix the frankly weird driving habits though. Oddest one for me was the driver who would drift gently to the right until the wheels almost touched the white line and then jerk the wheel left to get back to the centre of the lane. I thought he was falling asleep at first but watching his eyes in the mirror he seemed perfectly alert the whole time :???:

I think Uber are more expensive but so far the convenience and experience outweighs the cost, for me.

But I haven't been driven by PNGMK yet.

I too remembered

Pay via grab, no service fee for CC.

Pay direct to driver, surcharge applies ..

I think I am going to try this soon. Does Uber provide any training to onboard new drivers ? And do you have those "minimum number of hours" that you must be online, restrictions anymore ?

I have used Uber extensively when my car was in the workshop, or when I go out for drinks. Drivers are nice and polite, fare is cheaper than the normal cabs, however the inexperience of the drivers shows. Most of them don't know the way or get lost, and some of them drive terribly especially the amatuer aunties.

[purposely ignoring RATM posts]...

You can do in person training. There are also videos on their website. I did ZERO apart from observing a few when a passenger - I just downloaded the driver app and went for it - it is quite intuitive but the app is disruptive to driving. There's a good subreddit around for questions... https://www.reddit.com/r/uberdrivers/

The general advice on navigation is to use Waze (not google maps).

There are no minimum number of hours at all but realistically as I use a short term rental as my car (smove) there's no point doing less than 4 hours as that's at best 10 rides. I'm actually thinking of doing 6 hour drives now. Surge pricing kicks in at certain times and it is worth studying that to work out your schedule. I now plan when I will drive a week ahead (I only drive on weekends).

1. Uber pool is generally despised by drivers but can make money. Problem is the PAX arguing about who should be dropped off first (it's first in; first out). The PAX are not allowed to change route or do pick ups either and that can cause issues.

2. Generally most (women esp) are great passengers.,

3. I'm a little deaf and I don't want to be given directions so I now say "I'm following the GPS to [destination]" and ignore all input unless it's particularly pertinent or close to the destination.

4. You can cancel a ride as a driver any time if you don't feel safe or comfortable. It's YOUR car; not ubers.

5. Most riders appreciate a fast (with in the law), competent (in my case western) driver who gets through traffic smoothly and is trying to think a few turns ahead. Focus on that.

6. Avoid Orchard Road and Bugis on the weekend for pickup unless you want to look for some chinese guy in a crowd of 100 other chinese guys for a pick up. The addresses are painfully stupid too.
