Singapore’s population rose 1.3 per cent to reach 5.61 million in June... growing by 1.3 per cent from the year before.
...Singapore’s population comprises 3.93 million residents – or 3.41 million Singapore citizens and 0.52 million permanent residents (PR) – and 1.67 million non-residents such as dependants, international students and individuals who are here to work.
The number of citizens grew by 1 per cent in the past year to 3.41 million, through births and immigration. The number of citizen births last year was 33,725, the highest in more than a decade, and higher than the last Dragon year in 2012. It was the second consecutive year of increase since 2014.
The number of non-residents – largely comprised of foreigners working here and their families, as well as students – grew by 2.5 per cent to 1.67 million. There was stronger growth in the number of Foreign Domestic Workers (FDWs) and dependents of Singaporeans who are on Long-Term Visit Passes.
“The increase in FDW population growth reflects Singaporeans’ rising desire to augment their own care for their children and elderly,” said the NPTD in its report.
Although foreign employment remain low compared to the 2011 to 2012 period – when it rose by 77,000 – it has seen an increase as of June 2016. It increased by 27,000 between June 2015 and June 2016, up from 23,000 in the previous year.
