I've always thought that for cities the better approach would be to Invert the control, for the road to control the vehicles rather than for every vehicle trying to figure out what to do

Are the new taxis pre-programmed to constantly push on the gas pedal then let off, like so many uncles do?

SOME PEOPLE TRY TO TURN BACK THEIR ODOMETERS. NOT ME. I WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW WHY I LOOK THIS WAY. I'VE TRAVELED A LONG WAY, AND SOME OF THE ROADS WEREN'T PAVED. ~ Will Rogers

You mean the fuel saving mode?
I am curious how are they programmed to operate within the typical Singapore traffic, to follow the common rules or to follow the traffic regulations.
Also ignoring people trying to flag them down from the curb during rush hours should be included to avoid shock to the public. Another module, "I don't go there" seems already implemented.

I'm waiting for the shift change to appear at convenient times to avoid picking people up.
To get there early is on time and showing up on time is late

And of course, the mandatory, "so how" must be programmed in when speaking of destination... or world politics.

Uber, Grab Taxi and now self driving cars. I wonder if the Taxi Uncles are starting to worry?

You mean those taxi uncles who - a fair number live in condos, have twice year vacation, put their kids to study overseas - and complain about the evil government .. all the while earning measly wages driving taxi ?bgd wrote:Uber, Grab Taxi and now self driving cars. I am sure they have the right to complain

For Grab Car and Uber, if I understand the reports, not many make more than 2000$ a month after all expenses, but in turn adding about 10,000 more options for passengers.
And, unlike couple of years ago, I never had to wait for more than 10 to 15 minutes to book a cab, vs half an hour or none during the monopoly days.

Probably not, but all sort of banksters at the next economy down turn to come, may.bgd wrote:Uber, Grab Taxi and now self driving cars. I wonder if the Taxi Uncles are starting to worry?

I'm not a big user of taxis but have tried Uber recently. My last driver funds his car lease by driving on the weekend. He seemed pretty happy with the arrangement. His day job is delivery driver.
But I do find that Uber is often more expensive. The last estimate was $20 - $26 and the cab I ended up taking cost about $15.

Those are the success stories.... those driving full time aren't that happy .. it seemsbgd wrote:I'm not a big user of taxis but have tried Uber recently. My last driver funds his car lease by driving on the weekend. He seemed pretty happy with the arrangement. His day job is delivery driver.

Grab has been reasonable and cheaper than Uber, even during peak / surge hours.
Plus Grab rates are much cheaper in Philippines, vs local taxis and Uber !
