Career advice needed - job or location!?

Post by Salliey » Thu, 18 Aug 2016 2:44 am

Hello there!
I've been looking for a new job for a career change over the past month or so, and I have got some interviews, as well as an offer so far. I've been having difficulties making the decision about the offer, and I hope you can provide me with a perspective :)

My background:
Japanese, 23
Psychology graduate from a UK university
Previously worked as an English teacher
Currently looking for a job either in Japan or Singapore
Trilingual, lived abroad for the majority of my life

Current situation:
- I have an offer in Singapore for an investment research analyst position
- several companies have invited me to an interview for marketing research positions in Japan
- I am interested in pursuing a career in marketing research
- I have almost no interest in investment, although it may turn out interesting after I learn about it
- I really enjoy my life in Singapore
- going to Japan will limit my international exposure, both in personal life and at work

So I think it's really location vs. job now.
I'd really appreciate it if you could give me some advice on this!
I'll have to make the decision about the offer here in Singapore by tomorrow, so it's pretty urgent as well..
Thank you so much for reading this! :)

I think the most important factor is whether are you currently financially stable ?

Are you in a tight financial budget? If not, don't rush in accepting job offers that you don't like. It may be hard to get a job in Singapore (I'm sure Singapore needs Japanese Speakers) but settling down on a job you don't really like would definitely affect your performance in your work. So if your bank account is able to support your living in Singapore, take your time in finding a job that really suits you. Then, you can enjoy Singapore while having a great job.

If you are in a tight budget & u really really like Singapore, take in the offer as your temporary job until you look for a better one. Then you don't have to go back to Japan and leaving Singapore.

Cheers :)

Hi Kardin25! Thank you very much for your reply :)

I'd say I am okay supporting myself in Singapore with my savings for a while, but I am running out of time- I can only stay in Singapore until the end of the month with my short-term visit pass.
I suppose I can leave the country for a while and come back as a tourist, but I am still contemplating that option.. It seems that there aren't many positions available for people without much relevant experience in marketing research field :/

So I thought going back to Japan to learn the skills first and trying to come back in 2-3 years time might be a wise and reasonable decision (that doesn't take into account whether I'll enjoy life outside work :P).. unless an opportunity that I am genuinely interested in or would lead to something I am interested in pops up here in Singapore.

What would you say..?

Yes, that would a good choice as well. Surely looking for a job in Singapore without/ with less experience in the field would be quite tough, but you can too, sometimes all you need is some luck.

Of course, back in Japan you will have a better opportunity to growth and get some experience first, then you can always try to apply for Singapore jobs when you feel you are ready. Also, the pay would definitely be better too!

So it all depends which path you feel more comfortable to. There's no right or wrong choice as long as you know what you want. :)
