Singapore in Danger of Severe Economic Downturn?

Post by Strong Eagle » Thu, 18 Aug 2016 2:12 am

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/ ... llar-falls

Petrochem down 35 percent. Electronics down 12.9. Sales to China down 17 percent, down 19 to US, down 23 to Indonesia... those are big numbers.

Then... continue to kill the local economy with overly restrictive labor practices... can you say, "it's gonna get ugly?"

Indonesia is mulling lowering corporate tax to same level as Singapore and creating some tax havens. If that happens it will be interesting.

Oz authorities are warning pregnant women not to travel to Singapore because of Zika... so tourism will probably take a hit as well - anyone with pregnant women at home will think twice about travelling.

Not sure how much of an indicator this is, but I know a number of maids looking for work and have been for months in some cases. In the past the same girls could pick and choose their employers.

The F1 was down to 73k per event. That's from the inaugural which had over 100k. 15% down on late year. I can't wait for the whole elitist pile of dog crap to disappear. Never has a country given up so much convenience for so little return.

Yeah, we went to Marina square to get a view of the F1. It was totally unplanned and we were expecting huge rush in trains, like we experienced during those New Year fireworks. But we were surprised by how empty the trains were. We got a good view of the race from various corners of the Marina Square mall, for free :)

They will sell their soul just for a little bit of $$$$ advantage (very sad) ! Or prestige (Joseph Schooling gets paraded in a double decker  ).

You have hit the nail on its head. That has been the simplistic, short sighted thinking of those who plan the economy. It goes like, hmnnnnnnnn....... how do I generate economic growth and wealth for this country? By attracting people with wealth and the kind of activities enjoyed by them. Rather than investing in its own people. Encouraging enterprises (yes, it means accepting failures), an education system that educates the mind (get rid of those silly censorship laws) and allowing them to exercise their creativity and ingenuity (yes, even when they don't toe the official lines ) .

Good for you WD40. For not supporting their modus operandi. It is simply not sustainable. This way of doing business. Cutting corners and taking short cuts.

Not sure if it's just me, but it seems that the major shopping malls are a lot emptier these days... Tangs, Paragon and other Orchard Road malls.

Easier to get a table at a restaurant or cafe too. The other day we were at this Vivo City Thai place and we could easily change tables a few times (the downlights were affecting my friend's migraine) because it was so empty during lunch.

It's not just you.
They really are emptier, as are the sidewalks, etc.
