Buying property for the first time with "occupier" status

Post by bak_kwa » Tue, 09 Aug 2016 11:48 pm

Hi all,

I am a recently turned Singapore citizen whose spouse owns an HDB flat. She bought this flat before we were married. Since I am married now, I was told that legally I am now an "occupier" while my wife is an "owner" as per HDB parlance under the category of "nuclear family" comprising myself, wife and our child. I was also told that since my status is of an "occupier" of the HDB flat owned by my wife does that prevent me to buy my own property in Singapore?

Please advise.

Thanks :)

i don't think you can buy an HDB flat...

you're free to get whatever else you can afford... however, i recall something about HDB closing the loophole on "decoupling" recently.

wouldn't a google be of better help? i can't imagine HDB doesn't already have an FAQ on this...

I understand taxico but I do not mean an HDB flat since my plan involves buying either a pvt. condo (not an EC) or a landed property. Hence what's your opinion on this ?

Thanks :)
