Not that I am any positive about what the parents did but according to some other newspaper I read, the boy was punished this way because he was throwing stones at the cars. I see it more as a bad luck situation. The parents unlikely thought the boy might decided to punish them back and disappear into the forest, but from your article it looks even more tragic - it seems they forgot the place they left him, or something even more sinister happened.

But lack of response from the police dogs is really a worry..isn't it?
I just hope that this is a hoax and the boy is hiding somewhere safe and sound...much like the story of the American 'balloon boy' some years back...

Happy end fortunately.
From the satellite map the area seems not that big. I would think a helicopter with a thermal vision camera should do the job? A bit weird.

ahhh! what a relief!!!
my child was missing at a local market once...for about 10 minutes. She blindly followed other 'aunty' who looked like her mommy. and that 10 minutes, i felt like eternity! I can't imagine how the parents of this Japanese boy felt for almost a week in search for their missing son.
Glad that he is safe and alive!

He seems to be pretty smart... staying in that hut certainly was better than being in the open.

In that hut he got some mattresses so the choice was pretty obvious IMHO even for a young kid.
He was definitely more lucky than smart leaving the initial spot and doing a 7km walk already on the first day.
