Singapore International Schools

Post by Turenne » Tue, 26 Apr 2016 2:36 pm

Hi, I'm currently working as an ESL teacher in Singapore but I'm looking into attempting to get a job teaching English in an International School. I have two questions...

(a) when do International Schools tend to hire/look for new applicants or is this seasonal/different for each school?

(b) my qualifications are extremely meagre - Politics/History degree, History MA, CELTA, four years esl teaching experience at a language academy. No PGCE, no English degree. What are the expectations qualification/experience wise for international schools? Is a PGCE essential?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I realise this is a bit of a late reply, but yes for an International School job (a proper IS that is) it is absolutely, without a doubt, imperative that you have a PGCE or equivalent. Furthermore, you would also need x years post-pgce in your home country then apply for an IS in Singapore given it's a desired location and thus competition high for International Schools there

Why don't you go home and do a PGCE?

Btw, how is it as an EFL teacher in Singapore? I'm interested in going there, but don't see that many opportunities from abroad. Is your salary enough in relation to accommodation? I actually have a PGCE but am looking for TEFL opportunities.
