Mechanical Engineering jobs in Singapore

Post by likefrylikefry » Thu, 17 Mar 2016 6:31 pm

Hi,

I'm an Australian mechanical engineer with about 4 years experience in O&G construction / tendering and proposals.

I've been in Singapore for about 2 months trying to find a job and I'm not having any luck. It seems most recruiters don't even want to talk to me and the ones that do don't seem to hear back from there clients. I gather the job market in Singapore is pretty hard at the moment but is it going to be impossible for me to find a job here?

I don't have an employment pass and from what I can read on this forum there is a big push from the MOM to hire locals first over giving out new EP's. Is it worth staying in Singapore or should I go elsewhere?

Any advice is welcome.

Thanks

The push from MOM is not the reason for your lack of success. Its that O&G is all gloom and doom, as of now.

I realise the O&G market is in the pits at the moment and I've been trying to get into any sort of construction engineering position but have still had no luck.

Local works may require fluent Chinese or Tamil... that's my wild guess.

This will give you an idea of the general malaise of the O&G sector at the moment....

Hi,

Your oil & gas experience is good for a mechanical engineer. The construction sector is hiring & there are shortage of experienced engineers in this line. However there is a preference of Singaporeans over foreigners because of the employment laws passed not long ago. However I think you should be able to get a job in the construction line either as a contractor or consultant doing autocad, if you dont mind small companies and can do autocad.

Check the pay rates for construction jobs first.

I had some foreign friends looking for construction related roles and, apart from being hard to find, the pay was terrible, 1500 pm terrible. These were qualified, experienced civil engineers.

I'm an Expat working in the construction business, I can tell you the market is really bad right now, big listed companies going under JM. I believe if you are not being transferred getting a job here will be quite hard, at least in this area, and salary wise, I can tell you we are hiring NUS graduated Singaporeans with experience for 2900 sgd + bonus(not in this market).

I am also in construction. The OP will have difficulty unless he has specialist skill that an Asian cannot do.
