I think it's typically a winter dish, so a hearty rich stew with dumplings on the side... likely to hit the spot on a cold day.
We've done lighter versions, say halving the cream added, so not too heavy/rich. Then served it with sides of rice, or plain boiled potatoes and say broccoli +/- carrots instead of dumplings.
I suppose a parallel climate-wise might be found in the Northern Sub-con diet hinged around bread and cream based dishes, vs the south hinged around rice and coconut. ...maybe ? :)

- Hmm thought provoking - how one can try and adapt cold-weather western recipes to serve up in a tropical climate.
Oh and I'm not a big fan of spaetzle [sp?] or perogi dumplings. Super chewy balls of starch lacking much flavour (just my 2c). Reminds me of Japanese mochi balls, another cold-weather dish... which almost pull your teeth out they're so heavy.

Budapest appears a great place to live.. people are relaxed and casual, no one seems to be in a hurry, chess, beer cafes, healing baths, great food and beautiful women, no surprises that many nobel prize winners, musicians and thinkers are from this place.

Would be great if the work that was moved there, then moved out, moves back.

I for one would go there to work.

I was talking to many people here, the average salaries are extremely low, an engineer would make approx 2000 EUR a month ( 3500 SGD or threabouts) not much but then again they all seem to be tons happier than many expats i've seen in Singapore

^ and I wouldn't be surprised if rents are much lower than SG too.
Agree with your impression, it was quite a surprise to me too. I was expecting it to be more like my childhood mental images of former countries of 'Eastern Block'; concrete, drabness, poverty...

Budapest is amazing, it reminded me more of something like Vienna, if Vienna had a F-O huuuge river flowing through it perhaps :) It'd be interesting to warp 10 years into the future and see how it has changed.

The rents are hold your breath from 300 EUR a week to a max of 1600 EUR
there are some pockets of communist influence, concrete drabness and you also see a bit of poverty but largely they seem content and happy.
the Danube looks lovely at night.

Try Lecsó [Lecho]. It's lighter and purely vegetarian. One of the few vegetarian meals of this type I actually enjoy.

Unexpected bible quotes...

'Ezekiel 23:20
20 There she lusted after her lovers, whose genitals were like those of donkeys and whose emission was like that of horses.'

No, really :o

It almost always end up being dictated by an interest group. And those with the power and mullahs are the ones that morphed onto that rank. And they get to set the agenda (both good and bad) for us, the masses. Checks and balances will always be needed.
But the Gates Foundation has spent so much money — more than $3 billion since 1999 — that it took on an unhealthy amount of power in the setting of education policy. Former foundation staff members ended up in high positions in the U.S. Department of Education — and, in the case of John Deasy, at the head of the Los Angeles Unified School District. The foundation’s teacher-evaluation push led to an overemphasis on counting student test scores as a major portion of teachers’ performance ratings

The other point being, an outsider can't just come in and throw a whole bunch of money and bulldoze their ways into reforms. It won't work unless you have an insider track on what is going on internally. If you lack that insider experience / knowledge, maybe better to just provide the financial support to those who are already doing good work in their existing roles.

I tried a few things, I like the stews, they are great, the greek Turkish foods especially salads, hummus pita breads are lovely and light.
Goulash is just lovely here, I found many places selling a lighter version and I enjoy this over thicker heavier soups. I will try and find your suggestion.
