The sad suicide of Benjamin Lim, perhaps it will change things,

Post by PNGMK » Thu, 04 Feb 2016 5:39 pm

If you're parent you need to become conversant with the SPF procedures and children.

While suicide is not the answer I do belief the SPF/MOE and school screwed up here.

I not lawyer/teacher/CPA.
You've been arrested? Law Society of Singapore can provide referrals.
You want an International School job? School website or http://www.ISS.edu
Your rugrat needs a School? Avoid for profit schools
You need Tax advice? Ask a CPA
You ran away without doing NS? Shame on you!

Is it a standard procedure to handle like this minors in SG? I am shocked.

Yes. The spf are allowed to use isolation to force an admission.

Where is the common sense this child was prey to these predators. Absolute tragedy!

To summarize my own and other expats experiences in these situations:

1. Be pushy. Get involved. Don't accept the cops telling you anything. If you are a white expat you can use a bit of colonial hang over as well.
2. Get a lawyer ASAP. Even though they have limited value in Singapore perhaps they understand the system and can explain things.
3. While Singapore does not really have a 'right to silence' such as the West and judges can make adversarial inferences from defendants remaining silent; why feed the cops information?
4. Don't accept invitations to interviews etc unless the SPF actually arrest you or your kid - there's no such thing as a polite talk at the station.
5. Don't swear at the police - they will charge you or your kids.
6. A lot of minor cases (including this one) can be settled either out of court with a payment / apology or 'compounded' in court with a fine and payment (bribe) to the victim.
7. Remember the SPF DO NOT make the decision on charges; that is the AGC. The arresting office, the investigating officer and the prosecutor (AGC) are all different entities. Each have different KPI that may actually clash and offer a chink to squeeze through.
8. Support your child. Do not leave them alone. Do not blame them. Do not yell at them in front of the SPF. There will be plenty of time for that later.

Here is the place with the ISA, ISD, Whitley Road, etc.

But there was a proposal in the last couple of years that hearsay and rumour could be admitted as evidence in court... don't know if it was enacted.

Sooo...that'll essentially be sanctioning witch hunts?
