Chinese New Year's red packet tradition?

So I don't know if the tradition is varied by nations, but I just received 2 red packets from my bf's parents. And he was beyond surprised. He said by receiving 2 red packets from both his mum and dad would mean they are expecting us to get married. Is this true? Cos I asked my Chinese friend (from China), and she said she has never heard of anything like this before. Please enlighten me!
