It's a place I looked into visiting long ago. But it used to be [?] something of a bonkers commie dictatorship. I recall one other curious aspect, anyone (South America etc) who could get into the country and establish citizenship was then auto-entitled to EU residency. So it used to be a material long-term people-smuggling route... Ditto neighbouring French Guiana which IIRC is legally a full 'department' of France.

Have you found any decent Sub-Con food places yet? Or is Indon the more available spicy-food option? I've always found the Dutch to be cosmopolitan and outward-looking, so hope you're finding some 1/2-way decent spice. Though if you're on Amstel and pizza it sounds like you've already gone native ;)
There are a few Indian restaurants in the city, but haven't tried them yet. There are couple of Chinese restaurants near my hotel like this one:

The fried nice and noodles here are good enough to maintain the balance when I am bored of pizzas and sandwiches. :)

Trappist beer. Nao.

Common ones include Westmalle, Rochefort, Chimay, La Trappe. Can be found even in supermarkets for less than 4 euros a bottle.

You'll be supporting the good work of holy men if you drink their beer :P ;)

They are a bit heavy and if WD40 find Budweiser just ok, they may kill them.

WD40, try Grolsch, the standard type below, it is reasonably light.

Don't try Winter Grolsch.

How much was that, e25-30 cents a bottle/can [ex any depo]?

When I'd have mates over for a beer-session we'd start at the higher-end, say e.85-1.00/500ml, a variety of Bavarian or Czech beers. Couple of those. Then rapidly descend for the rest of the night towards the Lidl/Aldi/Netto own-label. By then - barring the first horror-jolt of the cheap stuff, your palate has had it and it barely matters what you're on.

I wonder if you can find this Munich beer? Probably in that specialist beer shop mentioned:
http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profil ... t=&start=0
'Augustiner Bräu Lagerbier Hell[es style]'

Look at the ratings, and the reviews :o Absolute world-class beer and IIRC it's under a euro per 500ml bottle. More to the point the flavour is lighter/subtle/intricate, shouldn't offend anyone who doesn't welcome a stronger/hop-attack... deffo give it a try if you find it, serve coooold. Despite it's delicacy, it might be one of my top-3 beers in the world. And it's not hard to find, at least in Bavaria. Might be one of the top-5 beers available everywhere in Munich. So I wouldn't be surprised to see it exported to adjacent euro-capitals, esp specialist beer-shops.

If that's one of my top-3. Czech Budwar is up there too. Would have to give thought to my 3/3, maybe a British ale...

I'm currently into dark beers at the moment; I've had one that was like drinking a chocolate cake and it was wonderful.

I'm no connoisseur but I do know if I like something.

True about ramping down on beer; when you're already inebriated, the taste won't matter anymore as long as you keep the buzz going.

Can you remember what it was? I'm going through a dark phase too.

Uh, you may have some difficulty acquiring it: http://www.beercartel.com.au/feral-bori ... ial-stout/

That said, a good stout, bock or chocolate-flavored craft beer should do quite nicely. YMMV though.

A masterpiece. He even looks like I always thought WD40 may look.
