Chances of PR: Indian EP married to Malaysian PR

Post by smoulder » Fri, 25 Dec 2015 11:41 pm

Hi All, my first post here :)

I am an Indian, male, 35, EP holder and my details are as follows:
* Been here for a shade under 3 years.

* Total of 12 years of work experience in IT with a Bachelor's degree in Engineering from India

* Annual salary of around $100k

* IT solution architect working for a very large IT MNC (joined in May 2015). I'm on a renewable contract (hoping it will become permanent in May 2016)

* This is my 3rd company in Singapore

* Applied for PR once in Feb 2015 and was rejected in June the same year (happened just a few weeks after I started at my new company.

* Just got married to a Malaysian Chinese who is a PR (been here for 4 years including 3 years as a PR). NOTE: it's not a marriage of "convenience" - we've been living together for around 16 months before we tied the knot. Her salary is around 85k per year. Our marriage was registered in Singapore btw.

* if it helps, I've taken a decent amount of life and medical insurance locally

* and I love durian :p

Wondering what folks here reckon are my chances of getting a PR given my circumstances. I have been advised by someone to apply again at least 6 months after my marriage - suggestions on this point too are more than welcome.

Thanks in advance!

Cheers

Dear smoulder, My personal opinion is that odds are against you. I have got one of my friends same as you; Indian national married to a Malaysian PR; having two kids as well; still Reject. Anywasy the ICA officers decide not us. All the best to you. Let us know the outcome later.....

Thanks tom. Yea I realize the odds are stacked against me and will certainly keep everyone posted on the outcome.

What do you folks suggest is an optimum time to wait after my ROM to apply so as not to raise the suspicion of being in a marriage of convenience?

There is no optimum time to wait. Also I dont see anything wrong in applying now and then reapplying every 2 years until they eventually give you PR.

I like your optimism Wd40. Until they eventually give you PR?

Oops my statement came across as if he would definitely get PR someday. I think, what I was trying to say was, he can keep trying every 2 years and that may not impact his chances in a negative way.

*** old thread update ***

* Since the time when this post was made, I applied 3 more times. One of those times, my wife applied for me and the other 2, I did it myself.

* wife is now a citizen. She quit her job to take a break.

* I'm now 39... Duh

* I work for a local bank and earn 165 k including bonus.

* last year, when my application was rejected, I appealed via the local mp but it was rejected again.

Well good news is that this year April was my 4th attempt. They approved me 5 plus months later.

You can bet it had absolutely nothing to do with your approval, however. Owning a condo only enriches you, not the country. Anybody can buy a condo, even a non-resident who doesn't live or work here.
But congrats anyway, it shows persistence pays off. ;-)

Thanks. Actually I was under the impression that they view it as "OK this guy is going to consume less national resources"... After all hdb is government subsidized. But who knows. At the moment, I'm just pretty happy that I've been approved :)

Congrats Smoulder - my initial impression on your issues was that you changed jobs a bit too quickly early on but then settled down.
I not lawyer/teacher/CPA.
You've been arrested? Law Society of Singapore can provide referrals.
You want an International School job? School website or http://www.ISS.edu
Your rugrat needs a School? Avoid for profit schools
You need Tax advice? Ask a CPA
You ran away without doing NS? Shame on you!

Thanks. Yes, many people have told me that. Having said that, every time I've applied, I've improved on what I *think* could be positive factors. Some of these are fairly obvious and some might not be factors at all (no one really knows for sure what goes on when someone is approved or rejected). Such as -

1. Higher salary
2. property
3. More years in a company (namely my 3rd company where I spent more than 3 years which isn't itself a lot but it's better than about 1 year that I averaged just prior)
4. More years spent in Singapore
5. Wife became a citizen
6. Job change to a local bank

Key reason was married to a SC.

Old thread. Yes, you are right about what is the most important factor.

I'm now a citizen by the way. For my citizenship application, there's an additional favorable factor - parent of a Singaporean child.
