As with Windows 10, there are more and more ways for you to be marketed by Microsoft's services. That's where they use your information for the most part. And just like with Windows 10, I'm sure there should be a way to go around these updates and avoid giving information you supposedly do not want to let go.

You do realize how stupid that sounds, don't you? The average user doesn't want to have to take a course in security just to be able to use a computer.

Yeah, my offence at this, is that Windows 10 is free and we all know buyer-beware (if major software company's software is given away free, *your data* are usually the price that you pay), but Windows 7 and 8 were paid for, so as far as I can see this is a big frickin' liberty that they're taking.
And don't argue, please, that Windows 7 or 8 was "free" on your machine when you bought it - the vendor paid for an OEM license and you can be damn sure they passed that cost on to you.
This is exactly why I don't game with Microsoft devices anymore. The Xbox 360 OS gui is chock full of British Gas video ads on rotation, and this on a device that I paid for and paid for a Xbox live Gold subscription. When I paid for these things was ad-free and the updates are mandatory for continued use.

The problem is, if you own any software line, like myself for multimedia processing, it's simply inevitable you will need to upgrade at one point. Unless you stop upgrading the software.
I'm in this fortunate situation I don't use Windows for anything I consider sensitive and even not for web browsing on a regular basic, so perhaps I will just cut off at the router the entire traffic leaving only the targets needed by the software.
