Relocating to SIN soon, need help finding a place

Post by taikobara » Mon, 19 Oct 2015 5:43 pm

Hi all,

My wife and me will be relocating to Singapore in the near future. We don't have any kids or pets.

My office will be based in Changi business park and we have been looking for apartments online for a few days now.

The area we are interested in atm is marina parade at the east coast area. Our budget is around 4000 sgd/month and we are looking for a 3 br, if possible with ocean view.

I will take a bike to work and am used to a few km rides in the heat.

My question is if you think marina parade is a good area to live. We are currently living in HK downtown and are very used to urban life. Will we get bored around the east coast? Is living more central also an option or will the commute be too far?

Recommendations for compounds with ocean view not too far from subway are more than welcome :)

One thing to know is that the MRT (subway) doesn't really run up the "coast" itself - it's a bit inland. In other words, the closer you are to MRT, the further from the coast you also are. As an example, there's a cluster of condos in the Amber Road/Amber Gardens area in Marine Parade, quite close to the coast, but they're around 25-30 minutes walk to the nearest MRT. For this reason it's quite common for people living on East Coast to use buses more than MRT.

Also consider what your "backup plan" will be for days you can't or won't ride. If taxi, then no problem. But otherwise, Changi Business Park is not well served by public transport. Fortunately, a number of private operators try to fill this void, but routes and timetables are limited.

Hi,

Thanks a lot for your reply!

Regarding the back up plan, should be no problem, I'm used to bad weather and if it's really pouring down I'll take taxis.

Is the bus network around marine parade well developed? More worried about my wife being able to get around easily than myself there. Also, I've been reading quite a bit of bad things regarding Geyland district, which seems to be marine parade area and around Dakota mrt. Would it be better to choose a different area?

Regarding marine parade, are there facilities like supermarket / wet markets near by?

Very good bus network around Marine Parade and the East Coast is a good area to live. Geylang isn't near Marine Parade. Parkway Parade, actually on Marine Parade, is a mall with shops and supermarkets. Nearby you have Katong and Siglap with plenty of places to eat and drink so you won't get bored. If you do need a change then bus or taxi will get you into town easily.

Cycling to CBP is a good option from there, much of it can be done via East Coast Park.

Hi,

I live in Siglap, work in the CBD and my partner works in Changi business park. She takes a bus to work and its a short ride. I highly recommend Siglap as its a small village with plenty of bars and restaurants, lots of buses, 2 24 hour supermarkets, and a short walk to ECP. We live in Villa Marina condo. Other condos in the area you may want to look at are Mandarin Gardens, Hacienda where I've heard positive things from friends who live there. If you want to look at marine parade road I would look at condos that are a short walk to Katong (east coast road and joo chiat) where there are plenty of eateries and shops. Given the current extended haze in Singapore you will be taking the bus more than cycling at the moment. Make sure you look at the URA website as it lists all rental contracts for each condo so it will give you a good base for negotiating. Current advertised rentals on property websites are grossly inflated. Hope this helps and good luck.

Thanks a lot for the recommendations! I checked on Nestia and liked all recommended compounds, but they were a little bit far away from parkway parade. One compound I liked was Côte D'Azure, but I just read some devastating reviews regarding building quality / management.

Anyone living close to parkway parade and can recommend their compound? Most crucial is clean, since the wife is already worrying about cockroaches
