Guys, can you please advise on your experience with relocating to Singapore with a dog. I have checked that the requirements and things to be done before coming and it is all good as we are moving from Australia. However, I need specific help with
1. Kinds of places that allow for Beagle dogs.
2. Best suburbs for pets.
3. Your experience with finding a rental that allows for pets.

Thanks in advance.

Best suburb would be Johore. Image

However have you done some search on this site?

The above question has been re hashed too many times.

Specific queries After some read up would help.

We moved here with a labrador, which - judging by the reaction of people in the elevator/on the street, is something nearer to a feral lion than a happy-go-lucky dog breed.

We didn't have any trouble finding a place that would allow dogs - just be upfront about it.

But, having moved from a house with a big fenced yard, nothing we found outside of a landed house is terribly convenient. Consider the distance/time it would take for your dog from door to suitable outdoor area to relieve themselves.

Also be considerate of your neighbors - for muslims, dogs are about the lowest form of animal. So try to avoid situations where you'd have uncomfortable encounters (would advise low-rise vs high rise for both of the above comments).

Well, a couple more to add:

1) be prepared to see a few taxi drivers refuse your hire, if you have your dog with you, and that's not just muslims, so if you can, get a car.

2) Muslims, well, not all muslims are like that, in Singapore. There is a minority who harp on the teaching that says the dogs are the lowest form etc. etc. but a fair majority in Singapore are beyond such ancient words.

3) larger dogs (like your lab) generally are feared here, since most people live in congested environment. Smaller dogs are pretty much welcome, and there is a large and thriving dog lovers community here.

Of course, not all Muslims are like that, and I apologize if it seemed prejudiced. I intended it as the opposite: Be mindful and respectful of others around you.

We have found a couple of pet taxis - they offer a more comfortable ride (esp for a bigger dog), though are quite a bit more expensive. It just saves the frustration.

The only thing I would be concerned about is that I believe that Beagles are by nature pretty active, curious and adventurous dogs. There are limited places in SG where digs can run around - and basically be dogs - lease free. Your beagle might go a little stir crazy here from lack of activity.

West Coast Park and Bishan have dog areas ("dog runs").
People also take dogs to Tanjong Beach on Sentosa weekend mornings.

It hasn't been mentioned yet - but your Beagle is not an approved breed for the government's HDB list. Meaning, you can't rent an HDB apartment and keep your dog there. If you're earning enough to rent a condo/landed property this won't be an issue.

Secondly, none of the condos I have ever lived in have had any kind of grass area. Not to say this applies to all of them, but space is limited. You might get grass patches between trees on the pavement outside, depending on the area.

Dog runs have been mentioned - otherwise you're required by law to leash your dog at all times in public.

So its not impossible, but without a car it might be hard.

We recently came over with 2 cross breed dogs, 6kg (12yrs old) and 11kg (2yrs old). We used 'Jet Pets' in Australia to do all the paperwork, picking up, delivering here (using Mitchville on the Singapore end). We were worried as hell but they arrived in good shape (hot, tired and a little anxious though, as expected).

We are staying very central to Orchard rd in a landed terrace. No grass in the yard but we brought over a small roll of synthetic pet grass from Bunnings for them to toilet on, and they have learnt very quickly. You need to hose out regularly though.

One tip, the dog will be in a crate for a long time, pre-purchase a crate and get the dog used to it, leave it in there when you go out, or for random times for a couple of hours regularly in the weeks leading up til you leave, couldn't imagine the torture of a poor dog in a crate for up to 10hrs or so who's never been in one.

Depending on the type of property you're lodging in Singapore, you will or might not be allowed to stay your dog in your residence. In accordance to the regulation in Singapore, if you're residing in a housing development Board (HDB) apartment, you can only keep one dog of an approved breed in your residence. Those privately residences could keep up to three dogs, which is in fact subjected to AVA’s approval. Sentosa, the East and West coasts are excellent choices for pet owners. Also, Bishan, Holland, Katong, Kovan and Seangoon are popular with dog-owners.
