Illegal for helper to wash a car?

Post by judyp » Mon, 14 Sep 2015 3:30 pm

Hi,
Before I get scolded, let me say this outright. As soon as I read somewhere online, that it is not legal, I contacted MOM and was told that in fact, FDW/helpers are not allowed to wash cars.

The contract includes carwash. In fact, all my previous helpers had this in their contract. The agency never pointed out to me that this may be an issue.
The only difference is that now I live in a condo whilst earlier I was in a house.

Do we re-do the contract? I will make some other arrangement for the car-wash.
Her current salary is 600+ with four days off.
Please let me know what you think.

I've always reckoned that if you can afford to own a car you can afford to take it to the car wash or do it yourself. I wash my car even now.

Ah I never heard of that rule before, but now that MOM has confirmed that it is illegal, you can probably draft the contract to supersede on the car wash part (need to check on the legal part of enforcing it). Nice of you to consider moving away from that option.

Just don't lower her salary now that she can't wash the car.

I'm sure the whole point of having a car is to give FDWs something to do at 6am. Better get a dog then.

Every morning I leave for work there is a maid dutifully washing her employer's nice silver coloured big Merc in the parking lot (which mean she probably started on it around 6:30. Unless it's P*ssing down rain, but if it's just stopped, she's out there and it aggravates the hell out of me!

Its not a question of money. Its a question of time. I don't drive, and the only time my husband can take it to the car-wash is on the weekend.

Get a dog, you'll be happier.

I would think that most are in same situation, doubt you need to worry. But if you are concerned, re-contract. I wonder how many other things FDWs shouldn't be doing?

They shouldn't be cleaning the rellies houses as part of the deal. That one or working in the Sir's company as a shopkeeper/janitor/dogsbody is also a big no-no.

Those I can understand, but washing a car would fit my definition of domestic. Just seems a strange exclusion to me.

Probably it's part of the government listening to the anti Ft rants.

By ensuring maids don't wash cars, business and employment for Singapore car wash goes up ...

Oh, wait, most car wash crew is Malaysian. ... ;)

What is it specifically disallowed by, a law, if so which one?

If not, then what else?

The "manager /VP" of car wash will be local though..... Good news all round.

A massive underclass of foreign talent. :D :D :D

if I wash the car myself can I even ask for their assistance?
