We've been also warned by some Indians before visiting India. Well, yes, it was worse than anything we expected and experienced before but still IMHO worth visiting. As a side effect my wife would preferably never visit India again. I have no such reservations.

For this part from Raj:
... I dated was bought up to believe how great a country India is and how wonderful the culture is ...

There is tremendous amount of nationalistic propaganda in India. I can only compare it to what was present in some countries during the USSR era. No wonder so many Indians lost reality touch what is also present in this forum from time to time and in majority of the Resumes sent for job applications to SG (yeh, everybody must know what lakhs are and my all reputed/reputable/prestigious anything and everywhere).

Thing is, more often than not, if an Indian (funnily enough, I think it's only males) knows or thinks something about him or India is great, you won't stop hearing about it.

well depends on where you go, if you went to see all the touristy spots then you'll generally have an unpleasant experience. however if you do a bit of research you can find great spots with very friendly people, ask SMS he's probably been to some beautiful spots in kerala himself.

Yep. And I'd I like to go back there again, truth be known. But then Cochin is not Mumbai is it. ;-)

I have no doubts about it, unfortunately with the limited time you still want to visit these highly touristic places like the earlier mentioned Taj Mahal. Places like this are generally ok (of course you are touted all the time), but the need to rely on public transportation (planes, trains) can turn into a nightmare if you miss your connection and end up, for example, at midnight in the New Delhi railway station.

no its not but then again Mumbai is one of the enjoyable cities, it isn't as bad as New Delhi where everyone is aggro, Mumbai to me is a bit like HK and cochin well its got its old charm and a lot of "gulf" money but the villages nearby are fantastic, you need to go check out Munnar or Thekaddy or the backwaters in Vembanad Lake total bliss

That's what we did and what was a challenge by itself (get a cab/tuk-tuk and not get scr**d). Fortunately the guy who hosted us few days earlier had a vacant room. This was one of the two times we felt really unsafe. 2nd time was not so bad but still... a shady guide mislead us to some private flat in the old part of Varanasi (which I think is even better in that respect than Old Delhi).

Overall the most tiring part was about staying vigilant almost all the time but we met also many nice people including one tuk-tuk driver in Jaipur, a guy in his 20s, illiterate (we were shocked), who took us from the railway station to our guesthouse also around midnight.
